EPCOT Eatery Slammed as “Appalling” by Disney World Visitors

Not every update at Walt Disney World lands the way Imagineers hope. For EPCOT, a park built on evolution, change is expected—but lately, not always welcomed.

Since opening in 1982, EPCOT has gone through several identity shifts. Once focused on edutainment and global culture, the park has leaned more heavily into Disney IP in recent years. When the company announced a bold multi-year transformation in 2017, it was billed as a move to make EPCOT “more Disney, timeless, relevant, and family-friendly.” That transformation, however, has been anything but smooth.

Budget cuts during the COVID-19 pandemic slashed or altered much of the initial concept art. A reimagining of Spaceship Earth never happened. The planned Mary Poppins attraction in World Showcase was shelved. The result? A piecemeal revamp that’s left many longtime fans underwhelmed—and now, their frustration is spilling into the park’s dining offerings, too.

Guests Say EPCOT's Connections Eatery Isn’t Working

Connections Eatery, EPCOT’s quick-service dining location located next to the park’s Starbucks (Connections Café), opened in April 2022 as part of the new World Celebration hub. Marketed as a fresh, globally inspired option, the restaurant serves dishes with nods to Italian, French, and Asian cuisines. In practice, though, guests say the restaurant is falling short in more ways than one.

In a Reddit post, one guest described their visit as “the worst experience ever,” citing long waits, a disorganized mobile order system, and a lack of seating enforcement as the main issues.

“Mobile ordered as travelling with two disabled adults,” the guest wrote. “No tables, 30 min wait to collect a mobile order. People sitting at tables with their tap water and empty chairs, refusing to let people take one chair despite them being empty. No policy on having to have food to sit down, can stay as long as you like.”

Several commenters echoed the experience, arguing that the space often functions more as an unofficial waiting room than a dining location—particularly for guests avoiding or recovering from the nearby Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind coaster.

“Solution is to have some sort of waiting area for people not riding Guardians,” one person wrote, pointing out that while rides like Test Track and Mission: SPACE offer air-conditioned post-shows, Cosmic Rewind does not. “Why they designed this ride without an indoor large post-show baffles me. People end up sitting there inside Connections waiting for their party to get off the ride.”

Operational Flaws Meet Real-World Impact

Beyond operational hiccups, Connections Eatery has also become an accidental front line for motion sickness complaints. Last year, guests with emetophobia (the fear of vomiting) were warned to avoid the eatery after a wave of reports tied to Cosmic Rewind incidents nearby.

“On our visit a few weeks ago, while entering through the doors that open out to Cosmic Rewind, there were multiple people vomitting in the bushes/on the grass, as well as in the Connections Eatery restroom,” one visitor shared. “It was very triggering and I hope this warning might help prevent panic attacks for other members of the group that struggle with emetophobia.”

Though no official statement has been made by Disney regarding the feedback, frustrations with EPCOT’s transformation aren’t limited to this one space. Guests have voiced similar concerns about CommuniCore Hall, World Celebration Gardens, and the general loss of cohesive theming across the central spine of the park.

What was once touted as EPCOT’s rebirth is now, for some, beginning to feel like a rushed renovation—one that hasn’t fully accounted for how guests use and experience the space in practice.
