Universal’s Epic Universe Coaster Appears To Be Under Construction

It’s only been 131 days since Epic Universe opened its gates in May 2025, but one of its star attractions, Stardust Racers, has already become the center of controversy.

The coaster closed abruptly on September 17, 2025, following the tragic death of a guest who became unresponsive after the ride. Universal suspended operations immediately, and the aftermath included a lawsuit against the park. That case has since been resolved after a settlement agreement, but fans are still left asking: what happens next for the headline coaster?

Adding to the speculation, new photos surfaced on X showing construction lights and a boom lift positioned near the coaster’s track. Shared by user @SortaGayItalian, the images sparked theories that trim brakes—a type of coaster brake designed to reduce speed—may be added or adjusted before the ride reopens.

What We Know Right Now

Universal has not released an official statement about the construction, but coaster enthusiasts are connecting the dots. Trim brakes, often installed to keep trains within safe speed ranges, are a common addition after safety reviews.

This isn’t the first time trims have been spotted on Stardust Racers. On June 20, 2025, fan account @ParkTwisted shared evidence of brakes added during testing. If more are being installed now, it could signal Universal is preparing for a stricter, safety-first version of the coaster.

Visiting Tips for Fans

While Stardust Racers remains closed, there are still ways to plan ahead for its return:

  • Monitor social updates daily. Coaster enthusiasts often break news before official park announcements.

  • Expect fluctuating crowds. If the ride reopens without warning, lines may be lighter. A big announcement, however, will guarantee long waits.

  • Use the Epic Universe app. Mobile alerts and wait-time tracking will be your best shot at riding on reopening day.

Hidden Hacks Worth Knowing

Longtime Universal fans know a few tricks for navigating high-profile ride reopenings:

  • Scout unique viewing spots. Even when closed, the ride can be seen from pathways and queue areas for a closer look at changes.

  • Snack smart. Smaller food carts around the coaster area are usually less crowded, letting you stay nearby without wasting time in long lines.

Why This Update Hits Hard

The speculation around trim brakes isn’t just about engineering—it’s about emotion. Fans invest deeply in marquee attractions, and Stardust Racers was marketed as one of Epic Universe’s defining thrills.

The tragic incident on September 17 turned the spotlight onto safety. For some, any adjustment that makes the ride safer is worth it. For others, the fear is that trims could tone down the intensity and change the ride experience altogether.

Online, debate has been fierce. Some posts mourn the possible loss of speed, while others applaud the park for making changes that could prevent further tragedy. The fact that this conversation is happening only 131 days after the park’s grand opening underscores just how closely fans are watching.

Until Universal makes an announcement, Stardust Racers remains closed and surrounded by speculation. Whether trim brakes end up being a minor tweak or a major adjustment, the coaster’s return will mark one of the most important moments in Epic Universe’s young history.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
