With Toy Story 5 (2026) officially in development, one major character is poised to take a bigger role—and some fans aren’t thrilled.
In a recent interview, Tim Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear, hinted at what’s in store for the next chapter in Pixar’s beloved series. And while he confirmed that Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz will return, it was his comments about Jessie (Joan Cusack) that have sparked discussion online.

“It’s a very, very clever story,” Allen told WIVB, after revealing that the film is “a lot about Jessie.”
“Tom [Hanks] and I do — Woody and I — do realign,” he added. “And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.”
Though Allen didn’t elaborate, the news quickly stirred some backlash on social media, particularly from those who feel the franchise is becoming “woke”.
“Potential woke movie alert,” one user wrote in response to the coverage. Another added, “Of course Disney would take away the focus on Woody and put it on a woman. This sh*t getting old, Disney.”

Some fans took it further, accusing Pixar of pushing “DEI [Diversity Equity and Inclusion] agenda,” saying that it could take “decades to eliminate” the perceived shift in storytelling.
Jessie first appeared in Toy Story 2 (1999) and has remained a core character ever since. Though never the lead, her emotional backstory and relationship with the main cast, particularly Buzz Lightyear (Allen) have made her a consistent fan-favorite.
It wouldn’t be the first time Pixar shifted focus to a female character. Toy Story 4 (2019) gave Bo Peep (Annie Potts) a starring role, while newcomer Gabby Gabby (Christina Hendricks) played a key part in the film’s emotional arc.
Despite the criticism, others are embracing the change, happy to see Jessie get more time on screen. It’s possible Toy Story 5 will even delve into a popular fan theory which suggests that Andy’s mom was the original owner of Jessie.
Pixar has yet to officially confirm plot details, but with Woody and Buzz both involved, it’s clear the studio isn’t abandoning its roots entirely.
Toy Story 5 is currently slated for release in 2026.
