Disney Promises “Impressive” New Frontierland in the Coming Years

Walt Disney World Resort has officially shared more exciting details about the upcoming transformation of Frontierland at Magic Kingdom Park.

On Wednesday, Disney highlighted some of the immersive additions to Piston Peak National Park, the new Cars (2006) themed area that will soon replace parts of Frontierland, including Tom Sawyer Island and sections of the Rivers of America. Josh D’Amaro, Disney Experiences Chairman, first revealed plans to bring Cars to Magic Kingdom Park’s Frontierland at D23 Expo 2024. The new area will feature two attractions different from those in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure Park.

Walt Disney Imagineering has already begun preparing for construction in Frontierland, and the upcoming changes will transform part of the park’s iconic Old West-themed area. The Liberty Square Riverboat and Tom Sawyer Island are set to close on July 7, 2025, to make way for the new additions.

On June 3, Disney shared a first look at Piston Peak National Park through concept art, offering a glimpse of the new immersive environment. Imagineers were inspired by Rocky Mountain National Park when designing this new area, which is named after a location in Planes: Fire and Rescue (2014). A new character, Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore, will welcome guests to the area’s family-friendly ride, while a more thrilling, high-speed race attraction will take guests through the beautiful scenery of Piston Peak.
