Universal Orlando Resort’s latest decision has stirred up more than a few Butterbeer-fueled debates. Deep in the heart of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure—once a fan-favorite masterpiece—has become a nightmare.
Longtime fans are calling it a “meltdown,” and the reason might surprise you. For a park known for precise operations and crowd control, this sudden shift has caught even the most seasoned Universal regulars off guard, leaving many to wonder what went wrong behind the scenes.
Universal’s Reign of Thrills
No one does high-speed thrills quite like Universal. From VelociCoaster’s insane top hat launch to the green fury of The Incredible Hulk Coaster, the park’s rides deliver pure adrenaline. But for Potter fans, no ride compares to Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. It’s the crown jewel of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter—a ride that combines cutting-edge coaster tech with movie-quality storytelling.

A Ride Unlike Any Other
Since opening in 2019, Hagrid’s has dazzled guests with seven launches, a backward drop, and a dive into the Forbidden Forest. You can ride on Hagrid’s motorbike or in the sidecar, each offering a unique thrill. It’s equal parts roller coaster and cinematic experience—a feat of Imagineering that put Universal on par with Disney’s best.
However, guests now say that magic comes with a serious drawback: the wait.

The Express Decision That Backfired
Universal made waves in May 2025 when it officially added Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure to its Express Pass lineup. On paper, it made sense—one of the park’s most popular attractions finally joined the skip-the-line family. But in practice, things unraveled fast.
Instead of reducing waits, the change made the line worse. The posted standby times—150 to 200 minutes—are painfully accurate. Guests describe inching forward while Express riders stream past. “Express ruined this ride,” one comment read, a sentiment echoed by hundreds more online.

Why the Wait Keeps Growing
The problem lies in how the new system divides capacity. Hagrid’s runs more miniature trains and takes longer to load than most coasters, so adding a steady stream of Express users throws everything off balance. Even short downtimes or weather delays can push the standby line to a standstill.
Universal may not have anticipated the flood of Express guests eager to ride repeatedly. That surge now bottlenecks the experience for everyone else, creating record-long waits that even the most patient fans can’t withstand.
Finding the Fix
How can Universal regain control? It could limit the number of Express riders per hour, or try a digital queue to spread crowds more evenly. Another option—though unlikely—would be temporarily pausing Express for Hagrid’s during peak weeks to get lines moving again.
Even minor adjustments to dispatch timing could help reduce congestion. If Universal wants to maintain guest satisfaction, it may need to be bold—because the park’s reputation for efficiency is now being tested in a big way.

A Ride Worth Saving
Despite the frustration, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure remains one of Universal’s most outstanding achievements. It’s theming, energy, and sense of adventure that still set it apart from anything else in the park. But as of now, the experience feels weighed down by the very system meant to enhance it.
If Universal wants to keep the magic alive, it needs to find that perfect balance again—before the coaster that once wowed The Wizarding World of Harry Potter becomes its biggest headache.

Universal knew exactly what they were doing when they made this change. They knew full well that it would drive wait times even higher than they already were and they knew it would drive more people to buy the Express Pass so they could ride it over and over again. I bet Express Pass sales have increased substantially since they made the change and this is all they care about – making money off an ancillary product that really doesn’t cost them anything, at a time when they need to make as much as they can to make up for the cost of Epic.
This is all about the almighty dollar. Universal and Disney both are for profit companies. Revenue dictates these type of decisions. As long as general park attendance is up and ancillary options add revenue this will not change.
Whenever people complain about Disney’s crappy fast pass system, I remind them that Universal’s is absolutely awful because it literally turns every ride into a pay to ride.
I was just there 2 weeks ago and we waited over 2 hours. We knew we wouldn’t be back for many many years and hadn’t been on it before so we just soldiered on. The best part was that it got dark during that time so it made the ride even scarier for me (I am a wuss – I was basically panicking for 2 hours straight)! It was amazing, but I wouldn’t wait that long again
we stood in line even for express for over an hour
Speaking from first hand experience, Universal should have never introduced Express Pass at Hagrids. The queue area was never designed to accommodate Express Pass. Those of us who worked the attraction knew damn right well it would never work.
Was there to ride this 2 time this month. Waited an 1h 75m to ride due to them letting 80 Express Pass riders through per 10 Regular riders……. ridiculous
We were there just before Thanksgiving (Sunday – Wednesday)
Not counting multi park versions, there are 3 versions of the express pass, the regular (once per ride), the after 4pm (once per ride, half the price), and the unlimited (as many times as you want, increased price).
We were there for our last day, and after tracking the wait times the other days we paid for the after 4pm express pass just to make sure we got to ride that ride. We did use it on others, but that was the one with the longest wait times. I think it made it to 4 hours at one point. Even with the express pass we still waited for about an hour.
We were able to knock out a lot of the lower wait time rides, then save the longer ones until 4pm rolled around.
We waited 3hrs prior to the hagrid being included in the express pass option even though we bought it for the day only for the ride to go down and we didn’t get to ride it. I went and complained guest services and they comped me a entry for the next day, and gave us special express pass for that ride. And the three that we missed while waiting in line. It was our day to leave, which was a pain to go back over just to do that. But I meant I was gonna do it, someone with us had never done it before. And I wanted her to ride it. We both had new hip replacements and had rented scooters The day before but had to walk to the back of the park to ride it and the hogwarts train and the hogwarts bank ride on the other side before walking all the way back to the front.
It about killed us before having a seven hour drive home
They should tell everyone they can all ride on the motorcycle part if they wish to, the sidecar then can be filled by single riders. So if you and your five buddies all want to ride the motorcycle you can do so and don’t have to argue over who’s going to get the sidecar y’all get the motorcycle and single rider will get the sidecar, so it shouldn’t be called single rider it should be called sidecar rider. This only works if you don’t mind not writing next to each other. I know my girlfriend wants the motorcycle and I want the motorcycle and we don’t care if we’re in front or behind each other or even starting a new train. And those single rider people that ride next to us in the sidecar are also overjoyed. I believe that it would shorten the wait time and single rider would also move faster if you didn’t mind the sidecar. I would rather ride the sidecar five times in 2 hours then wait and ride the motorcycle once! I don’t care anymore I just want to ride the ride.
