After ‘Stranger Things 5,’ Universal Drops Two Terrifying HHN Surprises

What Guests Need to Know

For Halloween Horror Nights fans, there’s a certain feeling that starts to build every summer.

It begins with rumors. Then speculation. Then the first major announcements arrive, and suddenly social media fills with rankings, predictions, and passionate debates about what could become the event’s breakout haunted house.

This year, that excitement already reached another level when Universal Orlando confirmed that Stranger Things 5 would be joining Halloween Horror Nights 35. The announcement immediately sparked conversation across the HHN community, with longtime fans and newcomers alike eager to see how the final chapter of Netflix’s blockbuster series would be translated into one of the event’s signature mazes.

But something interesting is happening now.

As the spotlight shines on major intellectual properties, Universal is quietly reminding fans why Halloween Horror Nights became a phenomenon in the first place.

Universal Is Bringing Back One of HHN’s Most Twisted Characters

In a reveal that sent longtime Horror Nights fans into a wave of nostalgia, Universal Orlando announced on June 22 that H.R. Bloodengutz is officially returning in an all-new haunted house: H.R. Bloodengutz Presents: A Halloween Fright-Tacular!

For newer attendees, the name may not immediately carry the same weight as Stranger Things or other mainstream horror franchises.

For HHN veterans, however, it means something entirely different.

H.R. Bloodengutz first appeared during Halloween Horror Nights 21 in 2011, quickly becoming one of the event’s most memorable original characters. Behind the grotesque television personality was Larry Kurtzberg, a failed actor and taxidermist whose desperate pursuit of fame led him down a horrifying path.

According to the character’s established backstory, Kurtzberg was approached by Lady Luck, disguised as a talent agent, and offered a life-changing choice. His decision ultimately transformed him into the deranged host of the Midnight Horror Show on WKNB-TV.

The story only became darker from there.

As Bloodengutz spiraled deeper into madness, his obsession with remaining on-air eventually culminated in a violent studio takeover that turned his final broadcast into a blood-soaked nightmare.

For longtime HHN fans, this isn’t just another haunted house announcement.

It’s the return of a fan-favorite piece of Horror Nights history.

A Second Announcement Arrived—and It’s Pure Nightmare Fuel

If the Bloodengutz reveal tapped into nostalgia, Universal’s latest announcement leans fully into chaos.

The resort has now confirmed that MADLANDS: Caged Cannibals is also coming to Halloween Horror Nights 35.

Just Announced: MADLANDS: Caged Cannibals In this haunted house, a defunct zoo is now the deadly domain of warring cannibal factions that have taken their animal instincts to extremes. They’re territorial. They’re hungry. And you’re lunch.

According to Universal’s official description:

“In this haunted house, a defunct zoo is now the deadly domain of warring cannibal factions that have taken their animal instincts to extremes. They’re territorial. They’re hungry. And you’re lunch.”

It’s the kind of original concept that has become increasingly synonymous with modern Horror Nights.

There’s no movie to follow.

No television series to recreate.

No familiar characters to rely on.

Instead, guests are dropped directly into a disturbing original world built entirely by Universal’s creative team.

And that’s exactly why many HHN fans are excited.

Fans Continue to Make the Same Argument Every Year

What started as a simple house announcement is already reigniting one of the biggest conversations within the Halloween Horror Nights community.

Original houses versus intellectual property houses.

For years, recognizable franchises have served as major marketing drivers for the event. They attract first-time visitors, generate headlines, and create instant awareness.

But among dedicated Horror Nights attendees, many argue that Universal’s original concepts are often the true stars of the event.

Fans frequently point to houses like Scarecrow: The Reaping, Dead Waters, Wicked Growth, Graveyard Games, and Slaughter Sinema as examples of original stories that delivered some of the most memorable experiences in HHN history.

The reason is simple.

Unlike IP houses, original concepts come with no expectations.

Guests have no idea what waits around the next corner.

There’s no familiar scene to anticipate.

No movie moments to compare against.

Everything feels unpredictable.

And in horror, unpredictability is powerful.

HHN 35 Is Starting to Feel Different

With Stranger Things 5 already generating enormous attention, Universal could have easily continued focusing exclusively on blockbuster intellectual properties.

Instead, the resort has now revealed multiple original concepts that showcase the event’s creative identity.

That balance matters.

Halloween Horror Nights has always succeeded because it offers both experiences: beloved franchises that fans recognize and original nightmares they’ve never encountered before.

The addition of Bloodengutz and MADLANDS suggests Universal understands exactly what longtime attendees want.

Not just familiar stories.

New ones.

Terrifying ones.

The kind that can only exist at Halloween Horror Nights.

What Happens Next Could Define This Year's Event

With additional haunted house announcements still expected in the weeks ahead, anticipation for Halloween Horror Nights 35 continues to grow.

Fans are already building rankings, debating potential house lineups, and speculating about which maze could emerge as the event’s breakout hit.

But if these latest reveals prove anything, it’s that Universal isn’t simply relying on big-name franchises to carry this year’s event.

The resort is doubling down on the original storytelling that helped make Halloween Horror Nights a cultural phenomenon in the first place. And if H.R. Bloodengutz’s return and the brutal world of MADLANDS are any indication, HHN 35 may ultimately be remembered not just for the properties everyone recognizes—but for the nightmares nobody saw coming.

When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
