The casting for HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series is generating plenty of buzz, and it looks like a major casting move is on the horizon.
As the show prepares to bring J.K. Rowling’s world to life on the small screen, fans have been eagerly waiting for official news on who will portray their favorite characters. After the announcement that John Lithgow will play the wise and eccentric Albus Dumbledore, another fan-favorite role might soon be filled by a beloved British actor.

Rumors are swirling that Nick Frost, known for his roles in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, is in talks to play none other than Rubeus Hagrid, Hogwarts' lovable groundskeeper.
While HBO has not confirmed the casting yet, Deadline has reported that Frost is “nearing a deal” for the part. If this deal goes through, Frost would be stepping into the shoes of Robbie Coltrane, who famously brought Hagrid to life in the eight films.
Hagrid is one of the most iconic characters in the Harry Potter universe, and Coltrane’s performance made the character an integral part of the series. It’s no surprise that finding the right actor to fill such big boots has been a major topic of conversation.
Frost, known for his comedic roles, might not seem like the obvious choice, but his down-to-earth charm and unique style of humor could bring something new to the character.

The casting news comes after other reports mentioned Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein as a possible contender for Hagrid.
However, it now appears that Frost is the frontrunner. His experience in comedy and his ability to deliver a strong, distinct character could make him a fitting choice for the role, especially considering Hagrid’s mix of warmth and gruffness.
While the casting is still unofficial, Frost’s cryptic Instagram post, in which he teased that something exciting was “happening,” has only added fuel to the fire.
Fans are excited by the possibility of seeing Frost take on the character, though they are also aware that Coltrane’s portrayal remains synonymous with Hagrid, and whoever fills the role will need to bring their own unique flair to the character.

HBO has made it clear that they will not confirm anything until the deals are finalized, as they aim to keep the casting process under wraps until everything is settled. The network did the same when it was rumored that Lithgow would join the series as Dumbledore, which was later confirmed by the actor.
With the release of the Harry Potter series slated for 2026, fans have plenty to look forward to. As more details about the cast emerge, it’s clear that the series will offer a fresh take on the magical world, while still honoring the legacy of the films that made Harry Potter a household name.
