Yesterday, the heat index at Walt Disney World hit 110 degrees. Today it goes to 112. And the forecast for the rest of the week just got upgraded to extreme.
Let me lay it out.
Look, this is not one rough afternoon that blows over and gets forgotten. It is a pattern that has been stacking all week, and the numbers are climbing rather than flattening. Every single day this week has been more dangerous than the one before, and today resets the record.
If you are going to be outside anywhere in Central Florida today, Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, or the Publix parking lot, plan around this one instead of muscling through it.
East Central Florida is under a Heat Advisory for most of Wednesday. Heat index up to 112.
The Numbers
Advisory runs 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Covers Orange and Osceola counties, which include both Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort.
Highs in the mid 90s. Heat index between 108 and 112, higher than yesterday.
Catch the start time too. Yesterday's advisory kicked in at 11 a.m. Today it is 10 a.m. That is an extra hour in the danger zone.
The Forecast Got Uglier
Here is the part that should reshape your week.
The National Weather Service in Melbourne pushed an updated forecast, and Greater Orlando is now looking at “extreme” HeatRisk temperatures between 95 and 96 degrees through Sunday.
Daytona Beach and Leesburg land in “major” and “extreme” too. The rest of East Central Florida mostly sits “moderate.”
And “extreme” is not filler language. The National Weather Service defines it as “Rare and/or long-duration extreme heat with no overnight relief affecting anyone without cooling/hydration as well as health systems, industries, and infrastructure.”
No overnight relief. Meaning your body never gets its usual recovery window between days. That is precisely how a multi-day heat event starts hurting people who are otherwise perfectly healthy.
Yesterday, this week was trending moderate to major. Today it is extremely straight through Sunday.
What They Are Telling You to Do
- Hydrate frequently
- Wear lightweight clothing
- Take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade
- Push outdoor activities to later in the evening
Add electrolytes to that list. On a run like this, water by itself may not be enough, especially if you are sweating for hours. Electrolyte packets, sports drinks, salty snacks, whatever gets your body to actually hold what you are drinking.
And drink before you are thirsty. In this kind of heat, thirst means you are already losing.
Disney note: free cups of ice water at every quick service location. Stop buying bottled water all day.
Where to Hide at Disney World
Plan the indoor breaks. Do not wait until you feel awful.
- Magic Kingdom: Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room, Hall of Presidents, Mickey's PhilharMagic, Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor, Country Bear Musical Jamboree
- EPCOT: Spaceship Earth, the American Adventure, Living with the Land, The Seas with Nemo and Friends
- Hollywood Studios: Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After, Walt Disney Presents, the indoor queues at Tower of Terror and Rise of the Resistance
- Animal Kingdom: Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, Conservation Station, Festival of the Lion King, indoor restaurant seating
Long indoor shows are the answer. Country Bear Musical Jamboree is your best Magic Kingdom option right now since Carousel of Progress is closed.
The Storms Are Not Coming
Central Florida normally has a pressure valve this time of year. Thunderstorm rolls through around 3 p.m., knocks the index down, and everybody breathes.
Not happening this week.
A drier air mass is choking rain chances, which kills those storms. So the heat piles up all afternoon and just sits there.
Stack that against the “no overnight relief” line, and you have a stretch that basically does not stop.
Today's Plan for Disney World
Build breaks in. Do not try to outlast it.
Worst window runs roughly 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Slot water rides, indoor attractions, or a table service meal in there. A long air-conditioned lunch is not a wasted hour today. It is the strategy.
Got a Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party ticket this week? That is a break. Party holders get into Magic Kingdom at 4 p.m., skipping the worst of the afternoon while still getting up to eight hours inside.
Planning a costume? Rethink anything heavy. A full costume at this dangerous heat index will end badly, and this party runs through October 31, when the weather is a completely different story.
Know the Warning Signs
More important today than any touring tip.
Heavy sweating that suddenly stops. Dizziness. Nausea. Confusion. Headache. Muscle cramps. Rapid pulse.
If somebody stops sweating or gets confused, that is a medical emergency. Not a sit-down-and-drink-water situation. Every Walt Disney World park has First Aid, and any cast member can point you there immediately.
Halloween is running. Summer is absolutely not finished with us.
