For decades, the original two Home Alone films have stood as unshakeable icons of holiday cinema. Released in 1990 and 1992, they cemented Macaulay Culkin as one of the most memorable child actors of the era — and they’ve remained favorites every festive season. It’s a legacy that many assumed would never be revisited in any serious way, especially after subsequent sequels and a 2021 reboot failed to recapture the magic.
That said, Culkin recently added fuel to the idea that maybe, someday, a proper sequel could happen. During a stop on his “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin” tour (per Variety), the 45-year-old actor said that he “wouldn’t be completely allergic” to returning as his iconic character, Kevin McCallister — provided the story is handled “just right.”

Culkin offered a rough pitch: Kevin — now a widower or divorcee — has become a single father, raised by work, distracted and distant. His son, upset by the neglect, locks Kevin out of their house and rigs the place with traps. “He’s the one setting traps for me,” Culkin explained at the event.
The house, in this scenario, isn’t just a setting — it becomes a metaphor for the fractured relationship between father and son. In Culkin’s words, the film would center on Kevin trying to “get let back into [his] son’s heart.”

Of course, even as Culkin toys with the idea of a sequel, not everyone is convinced it’s a good idea. The original film’s director, Chris Columbus, has argued against revisiting the franchise. He told Variety earlier this year that the original Home Alone “was this very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that.”
For now, Culkin’s pitch remains just that. But his willingness to return — under the right conditions — has stirred renewed conversation around the possibility of a “legacy sequel” that treats Kevin as the adult he is, rather than trying to re-create the 1990 version of him.
The Home Alone movies are now streaming on Disney+.
