Lucasfilm Brings Back Old ‘Star Wars’ Project Ahead of Major Anniversary

The galaxy far, far away is getting a distinctly different look.

As Star Wars approaches its 50th anniversary, Lucasfilm is revisiting one of the franchise's most famous adventures through an art form that has developed a huge following around the world.

Upcoming Star Wars Projects

The collection is one of several ways Lucasfilm is revisiting the original trilogy's opening chapter ahead of its landmark anniversary. The studio is also preparing a theatrical release of a newly restored version of the 1977 film, and an official Welsh-language dub titled Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, which premieres on S4C on Christmas Day.

There are also new comic-book projects exploring familiar events from different perspectives. Star Wars: A New Hope – Triple Take retells the film through Luke, Han, and Leia's eyes, while Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles brings characters from the two universes together.

The celebrations will extend beyond publishing, too. Star Wars: The Experience – A Journey Through the Galaxy is scheduled to open at Philadelphia's Franklin Institute on February 13, 2027, before embarking on a North American tour.

Meanwhile, fans will have another theatrical adventure to look forward to when Star Wars: Starfighter arrives on May 28, 2027. Directed by Shawn Levy, the movie stars Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon, a character whose mysterious past draws him into a dangerous journey across the galaxy.

A New Star Wars Manga Collection Is Also Coming

As for that collection, at New York Comic Con this year, Lucasfilm Publishing announced Star Wars: A New Hope – The Complete Manga, a 352-page deluxe omnibus collecting all four volumes of Hisao Tamaki's adaptation of George Lucas' original 1977 film.

For anyone unfamiliar with the project, Tamaki's manga adaptation first appeared in 1997 (the English release followed in 1998), translating the events of A New Hope into the distinctive visual language of Japanese comics. The adaptation went on to earn an Eisner Award, and the upcoming collection will bring the complete adaptation together in one volume.

That means readers will be able to revisit Luke Skywalker's first adventure, from his quiet existence on Tatooine to his involvement in the Rebel Alliance's battle against the Galactic Empire, through Tamaki's illustrations.

According to Penguin Random House, the story follows Luke as he encounters Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, eventually becoming involved in the desperate struggle against the Empire and the Death Star.

With the original film's 50th anniversary approaching, Lucasfilm clearly has plenty planned. And for fans who want to revisit the story that started it all, Tamaki's complete manga adaptation offers a rather different way to do so.
