Disney VoluntEARS and Cast Members not only create happiness for humans, but for furry friends, too! VoluntEARS from Hong Kong Disneyland Resort have been busy visiting animal shelters throughout the Yuen Long district, including House of Joy and Mercy and a number of others.
House of Joy and Mercy is a nonprofit organization that works to rehabilitate and care for injured, ill, and abandoned animals. They accept animals regardless of breed, age, or preexisting health conditions and do whatever they can to help them recover and find forever homes.
While helping out at the shelter, Disney VoluntEARS have taken lots of helpful tasks, including cleaning spaces where the animals live and spend some of their free time, helping to give dogs baths and walk them, plus preparing meals and learning about additional measures that go into keeping these animals safe and healthy.
Unfortunately the number of animals being abandoned and therefore taken in by the shelter has been increasing, which has made volunteer support a crucial part in the shelter’s operation and effectiveness. Ivy Tse, owner of House of Joy and Mercy spoke with the Disney Parks Blog saying, “The help from Disney VoluntEARs means a lot to us. I was worried that they may get tired and struggle in the challenging environment, but they were so willing to do all the tasks one after another and worked tirelessly for four hours. I am so touched to see their love and care for the animals.”
Disney VoluntEARS share Tse’s passion in caring for these animals and have been thrilled to help out when needed at the shelter. Disney Facility Services Cast Member Anna shared that [she is] “so happy that we were able to organize our first activity for abandoned animals. It’s allowed us to give some care to the animals that need it the most, reminding us to adopt instead of shop.”
