James Gunn’s Superman (2025) marks the beginning of an all-new DC Universe. But as the box office numbers soar and the positive reviews pour in, many fans are now wondering who will fill the boots of the Dark Knight in the upcoming DCU film, The Brave and the Bold (TBA). One of the latest unofficial contenders? Former Man of Steel, Henry Cavill.
In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, James Gunn, who’s also DC Studios’ co-chairman and co-CEO alongside Peter Safran, addressed the ongoing conversation about Henry Cavill’s future in the DCU, from the confusion surrounding his announced return as Superman back in 2022, to about the possibility of his appearance as a different character in a future film within the newly established timeline.
Gunn explained that confusion about Cavill’s supposed return arose when Warner Bros. made the announcement that the actor would be reprising his role while he and Safran were in the early stages of planning a Superman project (the film that’s now in theaters).
“It was really unfair to him [Cavill],” said Gunn, describing the moment he and Safran had to tell Cavill that he wouldn’t be part of the new plans.
However, the intriguing part of Gunn’s interview came when he was asked whether Cavill could be involved in the DCU in another role. Gunn’s response was direct: “I talked to him about it on that day. I would love to put Henry in something.”

Since the announcement of Superman (2025), fans have been speculating about Cavill’s potential role in the DCU’s future projects. While nothing has been remotely hinted at by Gunn, one possibility is Cavill stepping into the role of none other than Batman.
On Reddit, some fans are now suggesting that Cavill is the perfect fit to play the Caped Crusader in the upcoming DCU reboot despite the “baggage” of having already portrayed an iconic DC hero in the previous shared universe.
“I’d be on board for it with zero hesitation,” one Reddit user writes. “I don’t care about the baggage. I don’t care about casual fan confusion, I actually think Henry Cavill is one of the top five working actors that could pull off a capable ‘peak of career’ Batman.”
While the new Batman casting is yet to be confirmed, Cavill could easily slip into the role.
Superman (2025) is in theaters now. There’s no release date for The Brave and the Bold.
