A Universal Orlando vacation rarely survives first contact with the refurbishment calendar unchanged. Attractions need maintenance, dates move, and sometimes the ride a family expected to experience becomes the one unavailable during its visit.
Winter 2027 guests now have one more adjustment to make.
Universal Orlando has scheduled Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges at Universal Islands of Adventure to close temporarily from January 4 through February 2, 2027. The monthlong absence removes one of Toon Lagoon’s signature water rides from the lineup for most of January—but it does not signal a permanent closure or an unusually lengthy disappearance.
In fact, the most useful part of this announcement may be how early it arrived.
Universal Orlando Sets Popeye Ride Closure for January 2027
Universal’s official temporary-closure calendar lists Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges as closed from January 4 through February 2. Universal cautions that refurbishment dates are subject to change, so guests should check the calendar again shortly before traveling.
The posted window encompasses 30 calendar days. Universal has not described the work planned for the attraction or guaranteed that it will resume operations immediately after the listed end date.
The company also has not connected the closure to any larger change planned for Toon Lagoon. On the available evidence, this is a scheduled temporary closure—not proof of a replacement, retheme, or permanent removal.
X user @dean8001 highlighted the calendar update, noting that guests received roughly five months’ notice. That advance warning is valuable for travelers who may still be choosing dates, particularly when the affected experience is unlike almost anything else in the park.
Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges is not merely splashy. Universal’s own attraction guide describes it as a way to cool off during a park day, although “cool off” undersells the ride’s determination to soak nearly everyone aboard.
The 2027 Closure Is Noticeable—but Not Unusually Long
The timing is more interesting when placed beside the ride’s recent refurbishment history.
In 2024, Universal scheduled Bilge-Rat Barges to close from February 2 through March 15, according to Inside the Magic’s coverage of the revised closure dates. The attraction then closed from February 1 through March 15 in 2025 before reopening for the approaching spring-break period.
Both windows were longer than the 30 days presently scheduled for 2027.
No comparable Bilge-Rat Barges refurbishment appears on Universal’s current 2026 temporary-closure list. Available historical tracking also records no scheduled 2026 annual shutdown, but Universal has not explained why the customary winter closure did not appear this year.
That distinction matters. The evidence supports describing 2027 as a return to the ride’s established winter-maintenance pattern. It does not establish that Universal deferred particular repairs from 2026 or that the upcoming work will be unusually extensive.
What Islands of Adventure Guests Will Experience Differently
Travelers visiting between January 4 and February 2 should plan on Bilge-Rat Barges being unavailable and avoid treating it as a guaranteed part of their Islands of Adventure day.
Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls may provide another water-ride option if it is operating, but the two attractions offer different experiences. Bilge-Rat Barges uses circular rafts, spinning movement, rapids, overhead water and interactive attacks rather than building toward one large flume drop.
The closure could also matter to families who use Toon Lagoon’s water experiences as a break from a conventional ride schedule. That became especially apparent during the 2026 work on neighboring Me Ship, The Olive, when Inside the Magic examined how its temporary loss affected families and later reported its scheduled June reopening.
Universal has not listed Me Ship, The Olive as part of the January 2027 closure. Guests should not assume it will close simply because it sits beside the ride. Past refurbishment work has affected surrounding access, however, so its status deserves another check closer to January.
The early notice offers winter visitors something refurbishment announcements do not always provide: time to adjust before tickets are bought and itineraries harden. Guests visiting outside the listed dates should still monitor Universal’s calendar. Those traveling during the closure can plan around the loss now instead of discovering an empty raft channel after entering the park.
This is maintenance, not a farewell. For the vacations that land inside those 30 days, however, Popeye’s absence will still leave a noticeably drier hole in Toon Lagoon.
