It feels like Wednesday only recently became one of Netflix's biggest shows. Somehow, the characters are already preparing to leave high school behind.
The series debuted in November 2022, with Jenna Ortega taking over the role of Wednesday Addams and attending Nevermore Academy. Nearly four years later, Netflix has released only two seasons.
Season 3 isn't expected until 2027, meaning roughly five years could separate the show's debut from its third season.
Now, Ortega has confirmed another major change is coming. Wednesday and her classmates will be seniors in high school during Season 3.
Wednesday Addams Is Already Growing Up
Ortega explained that becoming seniors will push the characters toward bigger questions about adulthood, family and their futures.
That makes sense creatively. Wednesday can't remain a teenager forever.
What's surprising is how quickly the series has reached this point without actually producing many seasons.
Nevermore Academy became central to Wednesday from the beginning. It gave Wednesday her new world, introduced characters like Enid Sinclair and established the setting for many of the show's mysteries.
After just two released seasons, however, the students are already approaching graduation.
Season 3 could therefore represent the beginning of the end for the version of Wednesday viewers currently know.
That doesn't mean Netflix is canceling the series. Wednesday's story could easily continue beyond high school. However, moving the characters into adulthood would fundamentally change the show's setup.
Netflix's Long Waits Are Catching Up With Wednesday
Part of the problem comes from the enormous gaps between seasons.
Season 1 arrived in 2022. Season 2 didn't follow until 2025, with the 2023 Hollywood strikes among the factors affecting production.
Season 3 is currently in production and scheduled for 2027.
By then, approximately five years will have passed while Netflix produced only three seasons.
Ortega was 20 while filming the first season. She's now 23 and approaching her 24th birthday.
If Season 4 eventually happens and requires another lengthy production cycle, Netflix could potentially be looking at 2029 or later before releasing it. Ortega would be approaching her late 20s.
There's nothing stopping her from continuing as Wednesday. Instead, the issue is that the story may have to grow alongside its actors.
What Comes After Nevermore?
That's what makes Season 3 particularly interesting.
Netflix hasn't guaranteed Season 4, so nobody knows how much longer Wednesday will continue.
The series could follow Wednesday after graduation, take her somewhere completely different or find another way to keep Nevermore involved.
But it's remarkable that Netflix is already facing that question.
After only two released seasons, Wednesday is preparing for senior year. By the time Season 3 arrives, fans could have spent five years following a series with only three seasons to show for it.
Wednesday may be nowhere near its actual ending.
The high school era that started everything, however, suddenly looks much closer to the finish line.
