New Darker ‘Jurassic Park’ Animated Short Brings Crichton’s Novel to Life

A new animated Jurassic Park short film has recently surfaced online, and fans of the franchise are in for something quite different.

If you thought Netflix’s Jurassic World: Chaos Theory Season 2 was thrilling, get ready, because this latest entry from the YouTube channel InGen 2D cranks up the tension with a darker, more intense take on the beloved Jurassic universe.

What’s even more exciting is that this short is not just a rehash of the films we’ve already seen, but is based directly on a scene from Michael Crichton’s original 1990 novel—a book known for its much darker tone compared to Steven Spielberg’s 1993 classic.

The animated short, titled “The Main Road,” transports viewers to one of the most iconic moments in Jurassic Park: the terrifying Tyrannosaurus Rex attack. Fans of the franchise will instantly recognize the scene where Alan Grant, Ian Malcolm, Lex and Tim Murphy, and Ed Regis (who was replaced by the InGen lawyer Donald Gennaro in the film) find themselves trapped in their jungle explorers as the power goes out, and the beast breaks free in the middle of a tropical storm.

The stakes are high, and even though this is an animated feature, it doesn’t lose any of the tension that made the live-action movie such a hit.

So, could a more mature, darker animated series be the future of Jurassic Park? While the official animated shows, like Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, have their own fanbase, this short film offers a glimpse into what a more intense animated Jurassic world could look like.

But that’s not all for Jurassic fans. There’s a lot more to look forward to beyond this animated short. For those craving more dino action, there are several exciting projects in development. The live-action sequel Jurassic World Rebirth is currently in the works and is set to hit theaters on July 2, 2025. Directed by Gareth Edwards, who brought us 2014’s Godzilla and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Jurassic World Rebirth promises to be another epic installment in the franchise. The star-studded cast includes big names like Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, and more.

Per the official synopsis, Jurassic World Rebirth takes place “five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion” to find that “the planet’s ecology has proven inhospitable to dinosaurs,” adding that “those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived.” Scarlett Johansson’s character, a covert operations expert named Zora Bennett, is “contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetical material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs” that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.”

In addition to the live-action film, gamers are excited for the first-person action-adventure video game “Jurassic Park: Survival,” expected to launch next year. There’s also the third entry in the popular park management simulation series “Jurassic World Evolution,” where players can build their very own dinosaur theme park, complete with all the chaos that comes with it.

With all of this on the horizon, it’s clear that the Jurassic Park franchise isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Whether you’re revisiting the more intense version of Crichton’s original story through these animated shorts or eagerly awaiting the next big-screen blockbuster, there’s plenty for fans to sink their teeth into.
