As 2024 winds down, the next chapter in the iconic Jurassic franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth, feels very close. Scheduled for release in July 2025, the film promises to usher in “a new Jurassic era,” following the success of Jurassic Park (1993) and its sequels, including the latest installment, Jurassic World Dominion (2022).

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), with a screenplay by Jurassic Park and The Lost World: Jurassic Park writer David Koepp, Rebirth will mark a surprising return to the franchise’s roots.

Edwards, in a recent interview with Empire Magazine, revealed his passion for the original film and teased a back-to-basics approach for the latest installment. “It goes back to what I loved about the original,” he shared. “There’s a lot of fun and tense action moments. It gave me plenty of opportunities as a filmmaker to play with the audience.”

The story is set five years after Jurassic World Dominion and introduces Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett, a covert operations specialist on a mission to retrieve genetic material from three of the world’s largest dinosaurs. Johansson, a self-proclaimed Jurassic Park fan, expressed her excitement earlier this year about finally joining the franchise after a decade of trying. Her character, Bennett, will face ethical dilemmas as she embarks on a journey that could change her life forever. “She’s looking for meaning in her life after leaving the military, and this opportunity comes along where [after it] basically she’d never have to work again,” Edwards told Empire. “But through that journey, she starts to question the ethical rights and wrongs of what they’re doing.”

The ensemble cast includes Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), Mahershala Ali (Green Book), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool), among others. Notably absent are familiar faces like Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, signaling a deliberate shift toward a new direction for the series.

Universal Pictures has been tight-lipped about the plot, releasing only a synopsis and a couple of stills. The story teases “a shocking, sinister discovery hidden for decades,” suggesting a mix of thrilling adventure and mystery. One new image shows Johansson’s Bennett, armed and navigating tall grass—a dangerous move in this franchise.

With filming now complete and a trailer expected soon, excitement for Jurassic World Rebirth is reaching a fever pitch. Whether you’re drawn by the promise of colossal dinosaurs, gripping action, or Johansson’s long-awaited debut in the franchise, there’s plenty to look forward to.
