Lightning McQueen is trading Radiator Springs for one of the biggest racing weekends in the world, and he is not arriving quietly.
The Cars favorite is heading to Monza, Italy, for the 2026 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, taking place September 4 through 6. And while McQueen has spent the last two decades racing through Pixar movies, Disney theme parks, and fictional championships, this appearance puts him directly into the middle of a real Formula 1 event.
There is just one thing longtime fans will notice immediately: Lightning McQueen looks different.
A Very Real Job for a Very Familiar Race Car
This is not simply another character appearance.
As part of Disney's “Fuel the Magic” collaboration with Formula 1, McQueen will serve as the weekend's official support vehicle at Monza.
That gives him a much bigger role than simply appearing in a fan area. He will be part of the race weekend while Disney celebrates the 20th anniversary of Cars.
The timing is especially convenient because September 5 is also Lightning McQueen Day.
And Monza is about as appropriate a destination as Disney could have picked. Known for its incredible speed and long history, the Italian circuit is one of Formula 1's most famous venues.
There's a Cars 2 Connection
Disney also gave McQueen a reason to be in Italy that longtime Cars fans will recognize.
He was invited to Monza by Francesco Bernoulli, the Italian racer and McQueen rival from Cars 2.
Bernoulli competed against McQueen during the World Grand Prix and was one of the franchise's most memorable racing characters. Bringing him into the story gives this real-life F1 appearance a connection to the fictional Cars universe.
The F1 Safety Car Is Getting a Disney Twist
The biggest surprise may actually have four wheels that aren't McQueen's.
The Mercedes-AMG Official FIA Safety Car will receive a special Cars-inspired makeover for the Italian Grand Prix. The design is scheduled to debut exclusively during the Monza race weekend.
That means the crossover could reach far beyond Disney fans. The safety car is used during Formula 1 sessions when needed and leads the field during incidents, putting the new design directly in front of the worldwide television audience.
A New Cars x Formula 1 Collection
Naturally, there is merchandise involved.
Disney has announced the first-ever Cars x Formula 1 collection, with products available to shoppers attending the Italian Grand Prix. Select items will also be sold online through the Disney Store and the Formula 1 Official Online Store.
There will be even more Cars activity around the circuit, including a Mattel activation inspired by Radiator Springs.
Fans will also get a chance to watch the original Cars during a special screening held as part of the movie's 20th-anniversary celebration.
So, yes, Lightning McQueen is going to an actual Formula 1 race.
He is getting a new look, an official role, a connection to one of his old rivals, a themed safety car, a new merchandise collection, and an entire weekend of Cars-related programming.
After 20 years, McQueen has somehow managed to turn one of his fictional racing dreams into something surprisingly close to reality.
