Radiator Springs Racers Going Dark Next Week — No Comeback Date in Sight

The race is about to be put on pause in Disney California Adventure, and fans aren’t thrilled about it. Radiator Springs Racers — the heart of Cars Land — is closing next week, and Disney isn’t saying when the engines will fire up again.

The Closure

Starting August 18, Radiator Springs Racers will close for refurbishment. Disney typically gives guests a reopening date, but this time, there’s only a vague estimate: “about a month or longer.” That uncertainty is fueling speculation and has many parkgoers rearranging their plans to squeeze in one last ride before the shutdown.

Why Now?

The ride is due for a round of maintenance, including track resurfacing, lighting upgrades to more energy-efficient LEDs, and updates to the ride’s audio and visual systems. It’s the kind of behind-the-scenes work that keeps the attraction safe, reliable, and visually sharp.

While it’s routine, this maintenance period seems a bit more extensive than previous ones — perhaps explaining why Disney isn’t locking in a reopening date just yet.

Past Closures

Radiator Springs Racers has had temporary closures before — including a short break in February 2024 and a slightly longer one in August 2023. In those cases, the reopening dates were announced well in advance. This time, the lack of details has fans bracing for the possibility of an extended downtime.

Visiting Cars Land Without the Racers

While the headline act may be closed, Cars Land will still offer plenty to do. Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree will keep guests spinning and laughing, Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters will be twirling across the floor, and Flo’s V8 Café will remain a go-to for hearty comfort food.

And then there’s the seasonal bonus — Cars Land’s Haul-O-Ween transformation. This playful Halloween overlay, with decked-out “car-stumes” and clever décor, is a fan favorite and should be ready to go while the Racers are still under refurbishment.

Planning Tips

If you’re visiting before August 18, make Radiator Springs Racers your first stop of the day. The ride’s popularity means lines grow quickly, so either rope drop it or secure Lightning Lane access early. If your trip falls during the closure, plan to redistribute your time across other park favorites like Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! or the Incredicoaster.

Looking Forward

Disney has been clear that this is just a refurbishment, not a farewell. Once complete, the upgrades should help keep Radiator Springs Racers in top form for years to come. But for now, it’s time to prepare for a stretch without one of the park’s fastest — and most beloved — attractions.

So if you’re planning a visit, take the opportunity to enjoy the race one more time. After August 18, it could be a while before you hear those engines roar again.
