In 1955, Walt Disney brought his theme park dreams to life when he opened Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. Sadly, Walt passed away before he could see any more theme parks built bearing his name. For nearly 50 years, people visiting Disneyland only had one theme park to enjoy. That changed in 2002, with the opening of Disney California Adventure Park and the Downtown Disney District.

It’s been more than 20 years since Disneyland Resort experienced its last massive expansion, but Disney wants to take The Happiest Place on Earth to new heights. In 2021, Disney announced that it was working with the city of Anaheim on getting all the required permits and paperwork to expand the Resort once again. This new expansion is called DisneylandForward.

DisneylandForward will see a new theme park area built alongside Disney California Adventure Park. The initial artist’s rendering shows that the expansion will be across the street from DCA and will run from alongside the Pixar Pier area and past Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.

We don’t have much information on when Disney will begin its DisneylandForward expansion, when it will open, or even if most of the permits have been acquired. But Disney is now sharing more information on the attractions that they are planning to have in the new park!

Disney’s plans show that, if everything goes how Disney would like, there will be a total of sixteen new attractions. Here’s what we know — there will be five thrill rides, nine family attractions, two round rides, and an outdoor show.

Thrill Rides: DisneylandForward plans for two new outdoor thrill rides that will be similar to the iconic Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Disneyland Park and Incredicoaster in California Adventure. The Incredicoaster used to be called California Screamin’, but was rethemed in 2018, when Disney’s Paradise Pier became Pixar Pier. The Incredicoaster is the one Disneyland attraction with a loop.

The three indoor thrill rides will be similar to Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance in Galaxy’s Edge or Space Mountain in Tomorrowland.

Family Attractions: The new theme park will feature a total of nine family-friendly attractions, five will be outdoor rides and four will be indoor attractions. Disney has said that the outdoor attractions will be similar to Autopia and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree. The four indoor attractions will be like Soarin’ Around the World and the legendary Haunted Mansion.

Round Rides: To understand DisneylandForward’s two round rides, simply head over to Fantasyland. That is where you can find Dumbo the Flying Elephant and King Arthur’s Carrousel. Those two attractions are what Disney is using as the basis for the two new round rides.

Outdoor Show: Disney is known for its incredible nighttime shows, and this new one will be no different. Disney is planning on combining aspects of World of Color and Fantasmic! for its new theme park show.

The new theme park expansion would have fewer rides than both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure. Disneyland has around 40 rides and attractions, while California Adventure has approximately 25 rides and attractions.

While nothing has been confirmed, Disney has teased that the new theme park area could have areas dedicated to Frozen, Tangled, Peter Pan, Zootopia, Toy Story, and possibly even TRON.

Disney Fanatic will keep readers updated as we learn more about DisneylandForward.
