As summer approaches, Walt Disney World is preparing for an exciting season across its parks—and guests staying near Magic Kingdom may notice a few changes, particularly at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.
Initially expected to wrap by summer 2025, a major refurbishment project at the Contemporary Resort—including Bay Lake Tower—has now been extended through July 2026, according to Disney’s latest website update. Guests are advised that construction will take place in select areas, with potential noise and travel delays during their stay.
“September 2024 Through July 2026: Refurbishments will occur in select areas of Disney’s Contemporary Resort—including Bay Lake Tower,” Disney’s notice reads. “Please allow for extra travel time. Guests may also see and hear construction during their stay.”
This development affects one of Walt Disney World’s most iconic hotels. Disney’s Contemporary Resort, with its landmark A-frame architecture and monorail gliding straight through the building, opened alongside Magic Kingdom on October 1, 1971. Over five decades later, it remains a guest favorite—thanks to nostalgic charm, convenient location, and elevated dining.
Dining options here are guest favorites: California Grill, located at the top of the tower, offers panoramic views and a stunning vantage point for the nightly Happily Ever After fireworks. On the main level, Chef Mickey’s continues to be a must-do for families wanting a lively character dining experience.
In addition to the extended construction timeline, Disney has shared details about upcoming pool refurbishments at Bay Lake Tower. Starting January 26, 2026, and continuing through early May 2026, the Bay Cove Pool, Cove Bar, water play area, and whirlpool spa will be temporarily closed. However, guests can still enjoy the feature pool and other amenities at the main resort.
“The Bay Lake Pool, the feature pool, the water play area and the whirlpool spa at Disney’s Contemporary Resort will remain open for guests to enjoy,” Disney confirms.
The ongoing updates come as Walt Disney World continues to evolve. While large-scale projects are underway across Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Magic Kingdom itself, resort hotels are also receiving attention.
The nearby Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is currently transforming its main lobby and adding a new bar for adult guests, while Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort has also seen enhancements. These deluxe resorts, often costing thousands per night, provide premium proximity to Magic Kingdom, ideal for taking in nighttime entertainment with minimal transit time.
Speaking of entertainment, Magic Kingdom Park is about to welcome a brand-new nighttime parade. Launching July 20, Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away will light up the park with glowing floats inspired by Tangled, Frozen, and the classic Main Street Electrical Parade.
Additionally, Happily Ever After will shift its showtime later in the evening, from 9:20 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., allowing guests a little extra daylight before heading to Cinderella Castle.
With these exciting additions and evolving experiences, Disney continues its commitment to creating unforgettable memories for guests—even as construction and maintenance projects unfold.
