The Walt Disney Company and Marvel Studios’ Captain America: Brave New World (2024) movie is once again facing change following another significant political event. Kevin Feige’s studio has now revealed an instant replacement.
Captain America 4: Journey to the Big Screen
The fourth entry into the Captain America franchise was announced shortly after the conclusion of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+. The show, created by Malcolm Spellman and directed by Kari Skogland, marked Kevin Feige’s studio’s second foray into TV media for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The six-episode event reunited Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson/Falcon and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier for a political espionage thriller.
While The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was action-packed, introducing a new fearsome Captain America character in the form of Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, AKA U.S. Agent, Spellman’s series acted as a commentary on race relations in America.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier nuancedly tackled the complex themes of racism and patriotism. The series follows Sam as he grapples with Captain America’s legacy and what it means to take on the mantle as a Black man in America.
It confronts the systemic racism embedded in society and the historical injustices faced by Black soldiers, exemplified by the character of Isaiah Bradley, played by Carl Lumbly. Meanwhile, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) seeks redemption and grapples with his own past as the Winter Soldier.
The show deftly explores patriotism, questioning who gets to define and embody American values. It highlights the challenges of forging a more inclusive and honest vision of what it means to be a hero in contemporary America.
So, it is no surprise that the future of the Captain America franchise will continue to be equally political if not elevate the themes moving forward. Brave New World looks set to connect the unanswered dots inside the MCU, too.
Liv Tyler as Betty Ross and Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/Leader will join Harrison Ford’s President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in Captain America: Brave New World. Ford is heavily rumored to also play Red Hulk.
Aside from its apparent crossover with the Hulk franchise of characters and the casting of Harrison Ford as William Hurt’s replacement, little was known about Captain America: Brave New World (formerly Captain America: New World Order)
Everything changed, though, when the first footage premiered at CinemaCon 2024. It reignited hopes that Julius Onah’s new Marvel movie would steer the MCU back to its more realistic and grounded origins, akin to movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)–the second and most acclaimed entry in the franchise.
A similar teaser, released earlier this month as the film’s first official trailer, resulted in an even more divided audience reaction than expected. Once again, the fissure stemmed from discourse about politics and representation.
However, this trailer is not the one audiences will experience in movie theaters moving forward. Marvel has cut Captain America: Brave New World to reflect the current political climate and is debuting an instant replacement.
Marvel Cuts Captain America: Brave New World
The newly cut trailer sees the scene where Isaiah Bradley (Lumbly) attempts to assassinate President Thaddeus Ross (Ford) completely cut. Instead, the trailer extends the aftermath of that event, revealing new footage of the President’s security chasing Bradley and the latter launching a table at his pursuers with immense strength.
So why has Marvel Studios suddenly decided to cut the movie’s trailer?
Former President Donald Trump and the current Republican Party nominee for the 2024 Presidential election recently survived an assassination attempt while at a candidate rally in Pennsylvania.
On July 13, 2024, Thomas Matthew Crooks attempted to assassinate Trump in Butler County, Pennsylvania, while he was on stage. A Secret Service sniper killed Crooks after he shot and injured Trump and killed one other bystander.
Donald Trump was the 45th President of the United States and served from 2017 to 2021, following a career as a real estate developer and television personality. He remains a polarizing figure in American politics, known for his unconventional style, use of social media, and ongoing influence within the Republican Party. He currently faces numerous criminal charges.
Trump wasn’t the first to face an assassination attempt. Throughout American history, there have been several attempts on the life of the President of the United States.
Notable attempts include the successful assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth, the shooting of James A. Garfield in 1881 by Charles J. Guiteau, and the assassination of William McKinley in 1901 by Leon Czolgosz. In the 20th century, John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald.
Other presidents, such as Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan, also faced assassination attempts but survived. These events have significantly impacted the nation’s history and often led to increased security measures for the president’s protection.
It is clear, then, after the Trump incident, why Marvel has now omitted this part of the trailer moving forward.

Captain America 4 is shaping into an incredibly divisive entry for the MCU. Between its real-world connotations and the inclusion of Israeli actress Shira Haas, controversy regarding the movie is gaining momentum.
Sabra in Captain America: Brave New World
In late 2022, Shira Haas, an Israeli actress, was cast as Sabra in Captain America: Brave New World. The announcement sparked immediate criticism due to Sabra’s controversial history in Marvel Comics and the very real conflict between Palestine and Israel.
The first trailer prominently featured Haas, igniting social media debates and calls for a boycott of Brave New World. Marvel Studios later clarified that Haas would not be playing Sabra but a reimagined version of the character Ruth Bat-Seraph.
Instead of adhering to the original Sabra storyline, Haas’ Ruth Bat-Seraph will be depicted as a former Israeli Black Widow who becomes a U.S. government official and a close advisor to President Ross.
Despite this reimagining, the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict has led some Marvel fans to continue calling for a significant boycott of the upcoming Phase Five movie.
The Captain America Legacy
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Captain America trilogy, starring Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, is a cornerstone of the franchise.
The first film, Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), directed by Joe Johnston and written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, introduces Steve Rogers’ transformation into the super-soldier Captain America during World War II.
Alongside characters like Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), he battles the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) and his plans for world domination using the Tesseract.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo (the Russo Brothers), takes place in modern-day Washington, D.C. Captain America teams up with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) to expose a conspiracy within S.H.I.E.L.D.
While facing the Winter Soldier, Steve Rogers discovers that his formidable adversary is his old friend, Bucky Barnes. The film is praised for its espionage thriller elements and its exploration of themes like trust and security.
The trilogy concludes with Captain America: Civil War (2016), also directed by the Russo Brothers. The Avengers are split over a government-imposed regulatory system, leading to a conflict between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.).
The film introduces new characters, such as Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland), and delves into themes of personal responsibility and freedom. Each film in the trilogy was critically acclaimed and celebrated for its storytelling, character development, and action sequences, solidifying Captain America’s pivotal role in the MCU.
Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian) will also star in an undisclosed role, with Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres taking up the mantle of Falcon. The movie is penned by Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, and Matthew Orton.
Captain America: Brave New World will be released on February 14, 2025, as part of Marvel Phase Five.
