Marvel Resurrects Fan-Favorite Superhero After Disney Steps in, Kills Entire Movie: Report

Marvel Studios will soon release its 34th entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) drops exclusively into movie theaters on July 26, 2024, it will seemingly change the billion-dollar franchise forever–and it may just see the return of several classic 20th Century Fox characters, including one that was erased before they could even debut…

Inspired by Marvel Comics, Deadpool & Wolverine is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. As Kevin Feige’s only feature film this year, following many delays and reshuffles, the movie is expected to reboot the MCU somewhat when it drops this summer.

From director Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine sees Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman make their Marvel Studios debut as Wade Wilson/Deadpool and Logan/Wolverine. It will also be the MCU’s first R-rated movie, something Disney Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger promised after the Mouse acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019.

Deadpool & Wolverine also looks set to include multiple cameos, maybe even more than 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. As seen in the initial teaser and latest trailer, characters like Pyro (Aaron Sandford), Toad, Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, and Azazel are set to appear, joining the likes of Elektra Natchios, with Jennifer Garner reprising her role from Daredevil (2003), and Alioth from the Loki Disney+ series.

Of course, this is likely just a pinch of who will appear in the film–even Taylor Swift, who just released her 11th studio album “The Tortured Poets Department,” has been rumored to appear as Dazzler in Deadpool 3–and a new report suggests that two more X-Men franchise characters are on the cards to make appearances in Deadpool & Wolverine. One of which hails from a film that was killed by The Walt Disney Company over five years ago.

According to entertainment scooper Daniel Richtman (via Comic Book Movie), Dafne Keen’s X-23 and Channing Tatum’s Remy LeBeau, AKA Gambit, will appear in Deadpool & Wolverine. Keen’s X-23 played a pivotal role in James Mangold’s Logan (2017), while Channing Tatum’s Gambit has never been seen on screen before.

Before Logan, Fox released two other Wolverine-centric movies: X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and The Wolverine (2013). Gambit was featured in the former, played by Taylor Kitsch, but plans were once in motion for Fox to release an entire Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum as the leading man–but Disney killed it.

Gambit went through development chaos, with directors such as Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski all attached at various points in the process. However, despite the film being scheduled for a 2020 release, the film was killed after The Walt Disney Company acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019.

Gambit is a beloved member of the Marvel canon, most recently appearing in Beau DeMayo’s X-Men ’97 on Disney+. His death in the fifth episode, “Remember It,” caused immense distress across the fandom, with audiences now hungry for more Gambit in the wider Marvel film and TV universe.

It is unclear just how all of these characters will appear in Deadpool & Wolverine, but a recent insider scoop indicates that 70-75% of the film will be spent inside the Void–the area at the End of Time as seen in the first season of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki. With Alioth present in the recent trailer, this theory is increasingly likely. Watch the latest trailer here:

Tie this notion with a report of a new Multiverse mechanic being introduced in Levy’s movie called “The Anchor,” and the number of cameos will seemingly be unlimited. “The Anchor” element reportedly works like so: when a character is killed in the battleworld-style area seen in the trailer (the Void?), then the universe that character comes from is pruned from the timeline.

Both of these reports coincide with the idea that Feige is looking to reboot the MCU somewhat. Reynolds’ Wade Wilson even says in the first trailer that he is “Marvel Jesus” and that the cinematic universe is about to change forever. Including the Time Variance Authority (TVA) and Matthew Macfadyen’s TVA Agent Paradox, as well as the archival footage of the Avengers movies, pretty much confirms that some kind of timeline rectification is about to happen ahead of future installments like Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).

With just Deadpool & Wolverine anchoring Marvel Studios’ movie slate in 2024, next year is a lot more packed. Captain America: Brave New World (2025) will continue Phase Five, followed by Thunderbolts* (2025), which ends Phase Five. Phase Six will commence with Pedro Pascal’s The Fantastic Four (2025), and then Blade (2025) will close out the year in the Fall.
