Seven years after Avengers: Endgame (2019) seemingly closed the book on Marvel's original Avengers, the studio wants fans to think about that story again.
The movie is heading back to theaters, and Marvel has now released a new trailer ahead of its return. But with Avengers: Doomsday (2026) only months away, this looks like more than another chance to watch one of the MCU's biggest movies on the big screen.
Kevin Feige is promising surprises, and one moment in the trailer could completely change how fans view Captain America's ending.
Marvel Wants Fans to Revisit Endgame
Avengers: Endgame (2019) returns to theaters September 25 as a special Encore presentation.
The Russo brothers first revealed the re-release at CinemaCon, where fans learned this wouldn't simply be another theatrical run for the three-hour Avengers blockbuster. The Encore presentation will feature brand-new footage and an exclusive look at Avengers: Doomsday (2026).
That creates a short gap between the two movies. Doomsday arrives December 18, less than three months after audiences revisit Endgame on the big screen.
Considering where Marvel's next Avengers story is headed, returning to this particular movie could prove important.
Kevin Feige Is Teasing More Than Nostalgia
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that the Endgame (2019) Encore presentation will contain a few “surprises.”
More importantly, Feige has connected Doomsday (2026) directly to what audiences watched in 2019.
He said the upcoming movie will pick up where Endgame left off, “but also go back to when it all started with X-Men.”
That's a wide-ranging description for a movie already expected to bring several corners of Marvel together. It also gives fans a reason to reconsider some of the choices made during Endgame.
The new trailer may be encouraging exactly that.
Tony Stark's Time Travel Warning Returns
One sequence in the trailer puts Tony Stark's words back in the spotlight.
Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man warns, “You mess with time,” before the footage moves to Iron Man and then Steve Rogers fighting another Captain America.
Tony then completes his warning: “time tends to mess back.”
Those words certainly fit Endgame (2019). The Avengers traveled into their own past to collect the Infinity Stones and undo the damage caused by Thanos.
But Steve Rogers made another major choice before the movie ended.
Steve traveled into the past to return the Infinity Stones. Rather than immediately returning, he remained behind and built a life with Peggy Carter. He eventually reappeared as an elderly man and gave his Captain America shield to Sam Wilson.
That seemed like Steve's ending. Now, it might not be.
Captain America's Ending Could Have Bigger Consequences
Chris Evans has appeared as Steve Rogers in footage for Avengers: Doomsday (2026), putting Captain America back into the conversation.
His return makes Tony's warning about time feel particularly relevant.
Could Steve's decision to stay in the past have changed more than audiences realized?
For now, that's only a theory. Marvel hasn't confirmed that Steve damaged a timeline or caused the events of Doomsday. Still, another piece of dialogue creates an interesting connection.
Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom tells Marvel's heroes, “All of you have lived stolen lives. Now you must give them back.”
Exactly what Doom means remains unclear. But when Marvel places that warning alongside a renewed focus on the consequences of time travel, Steve's history becomes difficult to ignore.
Three Marvel Worlds Are Heading for a Collision
Avengers: Doomsday (2026) opens exclusively in theaters on December 18, with Joe and Anthony Russo returning to direct.
Robert Downey Jr. will play Victor von Doom, while Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers. The enormous ensemble also includes Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Florence Pugh, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Sebastian Stan, Simu Liu, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden.
Marvel has confirmed that heroes from three universes will collide. That brings the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and familiar X-Men characters into the same massive event.
And Marvel already has another chapter waiting.
Joe and Anthony Russo will also direct Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), scheduled to arrive December 17, 2027.
Endgame Could Matter More Than Ever
For seven years, Avengers: Endgame (2019) has represented the conclusion of Marvel's original Avengers story.
Tony Stark sacrificed himself. Steve Rogers stayed with Peggy. Marvel moved into a new era.
Now the MCU is circling back.
With Steve returning, Doctor Doom talking about “stolen lives,” and Marvel deliberately bringing Tony's warning about time back into focus, one of Endgame‘s happiest endings may deserve another look.
Marvel hasn't revealed the answer yet.
But if time really does “mess back,” Steve Rogers could be about to find out what that means.
