Disney’s Bold Move With ‘Moana’ Sequel Leaves Fans Buzzing as Update Goes Public

Disney fans were treated to a surprising turn of events when the long-anticipated follow-up to Moana took an unexpected shift. What was initially envisioned as a Disney+ series blossomed into Moana 2, a theatrical release set to sail into cinemas later this year.

After several years of speculation and behind-the-scenes developments, this sequel has become one of Disney’s most exciting projects, with eager audiences awaiting its arrival on November 27, 2024.

When Moana first debuted in 2016, it quickly became one of Disney’s most cherished films. The studio, fresh from the success of Zootopia, introduced viewers to a vibrant new world filled with Polynesian mythology and unforgettable characters.

Auli’i Cravalho, a newcomer at the time, lent her voice to Moana, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson brought to life the mischievous demigod Maui. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the film followed Moana’s quest to restore the heart of Te Fiti and reinvigorate her island. Despite raking in an impressive $687 million at the global box office, Moana’s legacy has only grown, and in 2023, it was the most streamed movie across all platforms in the United States.

Much of the film’s enduring success can be credited to its soundtrack, featuring songs like “How Far I’ll Go” and “Shiny,” written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina, and Opetaia Foa’i.

These songs became cultural touchstones and elevated Moana into Disney’s upper echelon of franchises, highlighted in Disney’s recent shareholder presentation. The film’s sequel, Moana 2, is a testament to its lasting influence, with the movie’s first trailer shattering records by earning nearly 200 million views within 24 hours of release.

The original plans for Moana’s return were announced at Disney’s Investor Day in 2020. Then, now former Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee confirmed that a series, Moana: The Series, was in development. However, in early 2024, Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, revealed that the television series had evolved into something far more ambitious: Moana 2, a big-screen exclusive.

Lee elaborated on the decision in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, explaining how the story outgrew its original medium. “We constantly screen [our projects], even in drawing [phase] with sketches. It was getting bigger and bigger and more epic, and we really wanted to see it on the big screen. It creatively evolved, and it felt like an organic thing,” she said.

The response to the switch has been overwhelmingly positive, as evidenced by the reactions to the film’s teaser and subsequent special look trailers. Disney Animation (@DisneyAnimation) recently shared a new special look update:

Visuals have been a particular highlight, with fans praising the stunning animation. New characters, such as Kele (David Fane) and Loto (Rose Matafeo), are poised to bring fresh energy to Moana’s journey, but co-director Dana Ledoux Miller hinted that some aspects of the ensemble cast had to be scaled back in the transition from series to film.

“In the series, there was a lot more room to play with some of the ensemble. [The shift was about] streamlining into all the things that we love most about Moana as our hero and our adventurer,” Miller shared, while also assuring fans that the film’s adventure would be “10 times bigger, 10 times more exciting.”

Alongside Miller, the directorial team includes David Derrick Jr. and Jason Hand. Taking over songwriting duties from Lin-Manuel Miranda are Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, best known for The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical. Fans will also be pleased to know that Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson are reprising their iconic roles as Moana and Maui.

They are joined by returning cast members Temuera Morrison (Tui), Nicole Scherzinger (Sina), and Rachel House (Tala). Meanwhile, the sequel introduces several new characters, including Moni (Hualālai Chung), Matangi (Awhimai Fraser), and Tautai Vasa (Gerald Ramsey), adding new layers to the already rich cast.

In a broader context, Moana 2 also marks a significant moment for Disney’s animation department. With high-profile publications like Rotten Tomatoes and Variety listing it as one of the most anticipated films of the year, the excitement surrounding the movie has reached new heights. Merchandise sales for the franchise have surged since the sequel’s announcement, further solidifying Moana as one of Disney’s flagship properties.

In a separate but related development, Disney is also working on a live-action remake of Moana, announced in 2023 by Dwayne Johnson himself. The project, co-produced by Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, quickly sparked debate, with some questioning the need to adapt such a recent film.

Disney’s live-action remakes have received mixed reactions in recent years, with The Little Mermaid and Snow White generating controversy over casting decisions and other creative choices. Nevertheless, the live-action Moana is still moving forward, with a planned release in 2026.

As the premiere of Moana 2 inches closer, the excitement is palpable. With a stellar cast, new characters, and grander adventures, Disney is gearing up for another blockbuster hit.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
