Disney is going all-in on Tomorrowland’s interactive dark ride, and if you thought Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin was just getting a minor refresh—think again.
The iconic ride is getting a serious overhaul in 2025, and we now know everything that’s changing before it reopens in 2026. From the queue to the ride vehicles to the gameplay itself, this transformation is setting the stage for what could be the best version of the ride yet.
So, what exactly is changing? Let’s break it down.
Say Hello to Buddy
There’s a new robot in town—and his name is Buddy. This Pixar-designed support bot will be the first character guests meet on their mission. He’s not just there to smile and wave either; Buddy will offer encouragement, run final system checks, and even give you a chance to practice your aim before you launch.
It’s a fun, story-driven addition that adds depth to the ride’s opening and helps guests (especially kids) get into the spirit of the game.
All-New Star Cruisers
Yes, the ride vehicles are finally being replaced. The new cruisers will feature bold Star Command-inspired designs and built-in video monitors that show your score in real time. You’ll actually know how well you’re doing mid-ride instead of waiting until the end screen.
And in case you’re wondering—yes, you can still spin.
Handheld Blasters Are Here
One of the biggest changes fans have been begging for is finally happening: the mounted blasters are out, and handheld blasters are in. These upgraded blasters feature laser pointers, sound effects, and even vibrations so you’ll actually know when you hit something. No more guessing.
Better yet, each cruiser will have blasters in two different colors, making it even easier to see who’s scoring what.
Smarter, Flashier Targets
Remember those Z-shaped targets that haven’t changed since the late ’90s? They’re getting a huge upgrade. Interactive targets will now light up, move, and react when hit—bringing the whole battlefield to life and making gameplay way more exciting.
Disney even held playtests with Imagineers to fine-tune these features, so it’s not just “new” for the sake of new—it’s been tested, tweaked, and optimized for fun.
When’s It All Happening?
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will temporarily close this August, with a reopening planned for sometime in 2026. Disney hasn’t released specific dates yet, but their official calendar shows the attraction open through at least August 4.
Between the new character, the upgraded vehicles, the high-tech gameplay, and the interactive targets, this update is shaping up to be more than just a refresh—it’s a full-on reimagination.
Get ready to report for duty, Space Rangers. A whole new mission is launching soon.
