New ‘Harry Potter’ Project Has Been Canceled, Reports Say

Over 20 years after the first Harry Potter films first captured the imagination of audiences worldwide, the Wizarding World remains a cultural touchstone.

The franchise has expanded beyond blockbuster films into merchandise, Universal Studios theme park attractions, and even the stage phenomenon Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, ensuring new generations continue to engage with the magic.

Now, the Wizarding World is set to debut on the small screen with a new television series that will adapt Rowling’s seven novels.

The upcoming show is written and executive-produced by Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession, His Dark Materials, and Killing Eve. J.K. Rowling, along with Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films, will serve as executive producers, while Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones, The Last of Us) is set to direct multiple episodes.

The series boasts an extensive cast that includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.

Each season will adapt a single novel, with Season 1 expected to premiere in 2027.

Meanwhile, Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions continues its rollout, offering high-production audiobooks of all seven novels. The adaptations feature a star-studded cast including Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore, Matthew Macfadyen as Lord Voldemort, and Riz Ahmed as Severus Snape, providing yet another new way to experience these stories.

However, not all projects are moving forward, as a VR-based Harry Potter game that was reportedly in development by Skydance has been canceled, according to YouTube channel Gamertag VR (via GamingBible). Meta, which owns the platform, has reportedly shuttered multiple VR titles, including Harry Potter. No official comment has been made by Meta or Skydance, and the stage of development before cancelation remains unclear.

For players eager to step into the Wizarding World, Hogwarts Legacy, an open-world RPG developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games, remains a solid option. Released in 2023 and set a century before the events of the books, it allows players to explore Hogwarts, learn spells, unravel magical mysteries, and so much more.
