Walt Disney World welcomed Epcot as the second theme park at Walt Disney World, joining the Magic Kingdom as a member of the “Most Magical Place on Earth”.  The date was October 1, 1982, exactly eleven years after the opening of the Magic Kingdom.  Epcot is now beginning a transformation that will enhance and bring to life a new and exciting Epcot that will thrill millions of visitors in the near future.

Walt Disney once said Epcot “would always be in a state of becoming “, a place that changes with the times, and so his vision is expanding and becoming all new.  This new Epcot will be divided into four neighborhoods, each highlighting important aspects of the world and its people.  These four neighborhoods are:  “World Celebration”, “World Discovery”, “World Showcase”, and “World Nature”.  Each neighborhood will celebrate their themes with new attractions, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and unique opportunities to celebrate the wonders of our world.

1. “World Celebration”

Epcot’s entrance plaza will offer new experiences, welcoming guests with a new reimagined fountain, new pathways, and lush green spaces that adorn the entryway.  The design will honor the origin of Epcot.  A new pavilion, a three-level structure will feature a plaza level, a middle expo level, and a park that sits in the sky on the top level.  It will host live events, and will be the home base for Epcot’s signature festivals.  In addition, this new pavilion will provide a spectacular elevated view of the entire park and a fantastic place to view Epcot’s nighttime spectacular.

While this Spaceship Earth project is currently on hold, we can expect the iconic “Spaceship Earth” to undergo a transformation in the future with new narration and an entirely new musical score that will focus on the moments and ideas that exemplify our world’s history with a whole new storyline that is sure to please every traveler on this “magical” journey.

“Dreamer’s Point”  –  As you exit “Spaceship Earth” you will be amazed at the breathtaking new view of Word Showcase from “Dreamer’s Point”, including a new heartwarming statue celebrating the legacy of the original dreamer, Walt Disney.  It will be a place filled with Disney magic and surprises, including a wishing tree in an enchanted forest and a story fountain celebrating the power and music of iconic Disney storytelling.

The “Play Pavilion“–Disney welcomes guests to discover an interactive city abounding with games, activities, and experiences that connect you with friends, family and delightful Disney characters-both real and virtual.  You might even find yourself competing in a water-balloon fight hosted by Huey, Dewey, Louie, and Webby.

“Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind”–This attraction will be the first “other-world” showcase pavilion at Epcot.  Based on the popular movie series, “Guardians of the Galaxy”, this exciting ride will feature a new innovation from Walt Disney Imagineering–a storytelling coaster that rotates 360 degrees to focus your attention on the action, including the first reverse launch on a Disney coaster.  Way to go, Disney!

3. “World Showcase”–United Kingdom Pavilion

A second project currently on hold is located in the United Kingdom. One of the most iconic and beloved Disney live action/animated feature length films, “Mary Poppins”, is being honored with a brand new addition to the United Kingdom Pavilion, namely, a trip down Cherry Tree Lane in London, England.  Take a stroll down Cherry Tree lane, past Admiral Boom’s house, then enter Number 17, home of the Banks family, where your adventure will begin.

“Harmonious”–This will be the largest nighttime spectacular ever created for a Disney Park and will celebrate how the music of Disney inspires people the world over.  There will be a stream of familiar Disney tunes reinterpreted by a diverse group of artists from around the globe.  It will feature massive floating set pieces, LED panels, choreographed moving fountains, lights, pyrotechnics, lasers, and more. The opening date for Harmonious is October 1, 2021!

France Pavilion–“Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure”–Yes, it’s coming to Disney’s World Showcase. I’m talking about the attraction based on the Disney feature length animated film, “Ratatouille”. This family-friendly attraction will invite you to shrink down to the size of a rat for a culinary adventure with Chef Remy. Your adventure will take place on trackless ride vehicles for a fun-filled, exciting race across Gusteau’s kitchen floor. The opening date for Remy’s Ratatouille Attraction is October 1, 2021!

4. “World Nature”

“World Nature” is dedicated to understanding and preserving the beauty and wonders of world of nature.  It will include “The Land” and the “Seas with Nemo and Friends” pavilions.

“Journey of Water”, inspired by the feature length animated feature, “Moana” is a lush exploration trail where guests can meet and play with magical, living water.  The water will have a life of its own, just like Moana’s friend, the ocean.  What an imaginative way to learn about the importance of the natural water cycle.

The transformation of Epcot is epic and will totally change the way we view this world we live in.  Walt Disney was such a visionary, and I believe he would really appreciate what is being done to bring Epcot into today’s world and the world of the future.  Walt was a lover of nature, the past, present, and the future.  I am so grateful he left us with his dreams and visions of a peaceful, natural, futuristic, and welcoming world.  The next few years at Walt Disney World and all four of the theme parks are going to be awesome and filled with magic and wonder!

About Cecilia

I am a working mother of four adult children, 2 granddogs, and one grandcat. I have been a Disney fanatic since 1959, when my parents took my sister and I on a journey across the country to Disneyland. Needless to say, we were thrilled, and this became our vacation destination for the next 10 years. Later, when Walt Disney World was opened, we travelled to Florida and discovered a whole new Disney experience, and WDW became our new vacation destination. Now, our extended family members are all Disney Fanatics and always ready to talk about anything Disney.
