Nobody at Hollywood Studios was expecting Mickey Mouse to show up on the side of a building today, but that is exactly what happened, and the reason behind it tells you everything you need to know about where the Walt Disney Studios Courtyard transformation stands right now. The retro billboard that has been taking shape on the exterior wall of the theater housing The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure is now complete, and Mickey Mouse is waving from the top of it. That detail, small as it might sound in isolation, is the kind of finishing touch that only goes onto a construction project that is genuinely close to being done.
The Billboard and What It Actually Says
The completed mural reads Walt Disney Studios, Mickey Mouse, and Silly Symphony Sound Cartoons, drawn directly from a historical billboard that once looked over Disney's Hyperion Studio, where animation production ran from 1926 to 1940. Mickey waving from the top and a decorative border framing the full design are the final additions that complete the mural and turn an exterior theater wall into a piece of park storytelling with nearly a century of Disney creative history behind it.

The wall where this billboard now lives was not empty before the transformation began. A Voyage of the Little Mermaid advertisement previously occupied the same space before being removed when the current show opened. The finished retro design is a significant upgrade from attraction-specific signage because it serves the entire thematic identity of the new studio campus environment rather than promoting a single show.
Everything Else That Just Changed
The billboard is the headliner, but it is not the only update that appeared recently at the Walt Disney Studios Courtyard construction zone. Additional trees have been planted throughout the outdoor space in front of and beside the Disney Jr. soundstage, adding to the greenery that has been part of the courtyard's design vision since the transformation was announced. New small trees have also appeared in front of The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure, giving the theater exterior a more finished appearance within the studio campus setting.
The Disney Jr. building now has a Stage sign painted near its corner, roughly where a red Stage 5 sign once stood, matching the original Hollywood Studios signage style that defined the park's early aesthetic. The possibility of adding a number later suggests some finishing decisions are still being made, but the sign itself is present and visible as part of the building's completed exterior.
The Sorcerer's Hat Is Already At Hollywood Studios
The billboard and the trees are not the only things already in place ahead of the May 26 opening. The Sorcerer's Hat was installed above The Magic of Disney Animation entrance earlier this month after being absent from Hollywood Studios for eleven years. The original hat stood on Hollywood Boulevard from 2001 until its removal in early 2015, and its return has been one of the most discussed elements of the entire transformation. It sits in a different location than the original, framing the entrance to The Magic of Disney Animation rather than presiding over the park's main thoroughfare, but its presence gives the new courtyard an immediate and recognizable visual anchor.
What Opens and When at Hollywood Studios
Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! opens on May 26 alongside the Walt Disney Studios Courtyard itself. The outdoor space with its green areas, character autograph and handprint pavement, and studio campus theming will be accessible to guests from that date. Characters are expected to appear both inside The Magic of Disney Animation and in the outdoor courtyard space.
The Magic of Disney Animation follows later this summer with character meet-and-greets, a digital drawing experience with Olaf replacing the live artist format, and an Alice in Wonderland-themed playground inside.
What Mickey Waving From That Wall Actually Means
Finishing details, such as a completed mural with Mickey Mouse waving from the top, do not appear on construction projects months before opening. They appear when the project is ready to be seen by guests. The combination of the finished billboard, planted trees, a new Stage sign, and an already-installed Sorcerer's Hat creates a picture of a courtyard that is in its final days of preparation rather than its final weeks. May 26 is the date. Mickey just confirmed it.
