Amid Backlash, Original ‘Harry Potter’ Movies Are Set for a Magical Comeback

As controversy surrounds HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter reboot, the original films are set to make a magical return to theaters, offering fans a nostalgic escape back to the Wizarding World.

Potterheads may be some of the most devoted fans out there, but responses to the reboot haven’t exactly been positive. While some are excited to see a TV series accurately adapt the books over the course of seven seasons, others have questioned the decision to replace such a beloved franchise just over a decade after it wrapped up in theaters.

Adding fuel to the controversy is the polarizing legacy of Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. Over the years, Rowling’s outspoken views on gender identity have alienated parts of the fandom, plus the franchise’s original stars. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have distanced themselves from Rowling’s comments, making it highly unlikely that they will appear in any capacity in the reboot.

Warner Bros. Leans Into Nostalgia

While rumors persist about a potential adaptation of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” the return of Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint in their iconic roles seems far-fetched. Insiders suggest Warner Bros. Discovery has even considered buying Rowling out of the franchise to smooth the path for future projects.

In the meantime, Warner Bros. is turning to nostalgia to fill the void. The first four films in the original series—Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)—are set to return to theaters in February 2025 with an immersive twist.

These screenings, presented by Fathom Events in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery, will feature 3D and 4DX experiences. Fans will feel as if they’re flying alongside Harry on his broomstick or casting spells in the halls of Hogwarts.

The films will be released on a staggered schedule, playing Thursdays through Sundays across theaters like AMC, Cinemark, Regal, Megaplex, and Showcase Cinemas.

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: February 13, 20, & 27
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: February 14, 21, & 28
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: February 15, 22, & March 1
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: February 16, 23, & March 2

Celebrating the Wizarding World Legacy

The return of the films coincides with key milestones for the franchise. Next year marks the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, a pivotal entry in the series. Additionally, Universal Orlando Resort is set to open its third Wizarding World area at Epic Universe, offering fans even more opportunities to immerse themselves in the magic.

For those unable to catch the films in theaters, they remain available to stream on Max—also the planned home for the divisive Harry Potter reboot TV series, now rebranded for HBO. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the Wizarding World, this theatrical event promises a spellbinding trip down memory lane.
