The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have rarely stayed the same for long. Since their 1984 comic book debut, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael have been reinvented over the course of four decades through various media, including cartoons, movies, and video games.
Mutant Mayhem (2023) gave the franchise a bold new start, earning $180.5 million worldwide on a $70 million budget. Critics praised the 3D animated film’s humor and character dynamics, setting the stage for a sequel initially slated for 2026. Paramount has since delayed the follow-up to September 2027 amid studio-wide scheduling changes.

Alongside theatrical projects, the universe established in the 2023 film expanded on other platforms. The 2024 video game Mutants Unleashed and the animated series Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Paramount+ introduced new stories and characters.
However, Paramount has now confirmed that the latter installment will conclude after its second season. While Season 1 earned a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, some viewers felt it didn’t match the energy of Mutant Mayhem or older TMNT cartoons.

This cancelation follows a trend for shorter-run TMNT shows. Long-running entries like the 1987 cartoon or the 2003 reboot lasted multiple seasons, but Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2018) also wrapped after two (although it did also get a film).
Corporate shifts after the Paramount-Skydance merger likely influenced the decision, signaling a focus on theatrical content over ongoing TV series.
But the Mutant Mayhem franchise is far from slowing down. A new short film, Chrome Alone 2 – Lost in New Jersey, arrives December 19, continuing the Mutant Mayhem universe. Check out the official trailer below:
Paramount is also developing a live-action film based on the IDW comic The Last Ronin, with Tyler Burton Smith writing the script and Walter Hamada producing.
Even with the early end of Tales, fans will see the Ninja Turtles in theaters, on streaming, in games, and, of course, in IDW's ongoing comics.
Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Season 2 will premiere on Paramount+ this December. The untitled Mutant Mayhem movie sequel arrives in theaters September, 2027.
