Permanent Changes Underway: After 4 Months, Disney World Seals Fate of Closed EPCOT Location

Guests walking through EPCOT lately have probably noticed that construction has returned to the experience. Disney has spent years rebuilding large portions of the park, and even after several major projects wrapped up, the work never truly stopped.

Now, another section of World Showcase is changing in a very noticeable way.

Scaffolding, blocked entrances, construction walls, and new permits have begun reshaping two well-known EPCOT locations simultaneously. While Disney fans are used to seeing updates around the park, these latest projects are affecting some of the most recognizable areas in World Showcase.

And the timing could affect one of EPCOT’s biggest annual events later this year.

Why World Showcase Matters So Much to EPCOT Fans

Every Disney park has its identity, but World Showcase gives EPCOT an atmosphere that feels completely different from the rest of Walt Disney World.

Guests do not just show up for rides. They come to spend hours wandering from pavilion to pavilion, trying food, listening to music, shopping, and taking in the architecture inspired by countries around the world. The area changes constantly depending on the season, festival, or even time of day.

That is why visible construction in World Showcase always stands out.

Even small changes can completely alter the atmosphere guests have grown attached to over the years. Right now, one of the largest visual changes is happening at the Mexico Pavilion.

The Mexico Pavilion Still Looks Very Different

Disney crews have continued exterior refurbishment work on the Mexico Pavilion pyramid for months. The project first became noticeable in February 2026 when scaffolding and themed scrims appeared around portions of the structure.

Since then, guests have had to deal with temporary pathway closures and blocked entrances while work continues.

Recently, Disney reopened the front-left entrance to the pavilion after it had been inaccessible for about 3 months. Even with that pathway available again, the refurbishment is far from finished. Scaffolding still surrounds portions of the pyramid, and another side entrance remains blocked while crews continue working behind the scenes.

Fortunately, the updates have not interrupted the pavilion’s signature attraction. Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros continues operating normally after receiving previous enhancements to its screens and audio.

But while the Mexico Pavilion has grabbed attention visually, another EPCOT change nearby may have an even larger impact on guests.

Refreshment Port Is Disappearing

Back in January 2026, Disney closed Refreshment Port near the Canada Pavilion for refurbishment. At first, most guests assumed the closure would simply lead to minor updates before the location reopened later in the year.

Instead, Disney decided to reimagine the space completely.

The company later confirmed that Refreshment Port would become La Poutinerie Hosted by Air Canada. For longtime EPCOT visitors, that announcement marked the end of a location that had quietly become part of the park’s festival culture over the years.

Refreshment Port regularly served festival menu items during EPCOT events and built a reputation for its different poutine dishes. Because of its location near Canada, the stand became a convenient stop for guests moving around World Showcase during busy food festivals.

Now, Disney is giving the entire location a fresh identity.

Disney Keeps Pushing Forward With the Transformation

Although Disney has revealed concept art for La Poutinerie, it has not yet announced an official opening date.

Construction has continued behind walls for months, and recent permits suggest even more exterior work remains ahead. Disney filed paperwork connected to installing additional set elements around the location, signaling that visible changes are still coming.

Concept art indicates the building itself will largely remain intact, but Disney appears ready to retheme several details around the structure. The artwork points to changes in the roof, chimney detailing, signage, and decorative elements that are more closely tied to Canadian theming.

Guests can still spot construction equipment above the roofline, making it clear that work is ongoing. At the same time, some pieces of the old Refreshment Port remain in place for now, including portions of the existing signage.

Disney has also confirmed that the new location will continue to lean heavily on Canadian-inspired dishes, especially poutine.

EPCOT’s Festival Crowds Could Feel the Effects

The biggest question now involves timing.

EPCOT’s International Food & Wine Festival begins August 27, 2026, but Disney has not confirmed whether La Poutinerie will be ready before opening day.

If the location stays closed into the festival season, EPCOT will temporarily lose one of its longtime food stops during one of the park’s busiest stretches of the year. Fewer food locations could create larger crowds at nearby booths while also reducing the number of places guests can spread out across World Showcase.

However, if Disney opens La Poutinerie before the festival begins, the new restaurant could quickly become one of EPCOT’s busiest spots. Guests are already curious about the replacement, and a brand-new Canada-inspired food location debuting during Food & Wine feels like a perfect fit for EPCOT’s festival atmosphere.

EPCOT’s Reinvention Continues

Disney has spent years transforming EPCOT, and the park still looks like it is evolving in real time.

Between the Mexico Pavilion refurbishment and the complete reimagining of Refreshment Port, guests are watching another familiar part of World Showcase slowly turn into something new.

Some fans may miss the original versions of these spaces. Others will embrace the updates immediately.

Either way, Disney continues pushing EPCOT deeper into a new era, and it does not appear the changes will slow down anytime soon.
