Actor Johnny Depp isn’t done acting, and there are undoubtedly some big projects on the horizon for the 60-year-old entertainer.

Johnny Depp’s journey began in the 1980s, when he gained widespread recognition for his role as Officer Tom Hanson in the hit television series 21 Jump Street (1987-1991). Depp’s portrayal of the young, undercover cop navigating the complexities of high school life resonated with audiences and established him as a rising star in Hollywood.

Building upon his success in television, Depp transitioned to the big screen with notable performances in films such as Edward Scissorhands (1990), directed by Tim Burton, where he portrayed the titular character with depth and vulnerability. Throughout the 1990s, he continued to showcase his versatility with roles ranging from the quirky filmmaker Ed Wood in Ed Wood (1994) to the eccentric Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998), earning critical acclaim for his ability to inhabit complex characters with ease.

However, it was his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) that would redefine Depp’s career and propel him to international superstardom. Inspired by a desire to create a character that defied conventions and expectations, Depp infused Captain Jack Sparrow with a unique blend of charm, wit, and unpredictability, earning him an Academy Award nomination and solidifying his status as one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars.

The success of Pirates of the Caribbean not only elevated Depp’s profile but also afforded him the freedom to pursue a diverse range of roles, from the enigmatic Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) to the infamous gangster Whitey Bulger in Black Mass (2015). Despite facing personal and legal challenges in recent years, Depp’s impact on the entertainment industry remains undeniable.

After he finished the conclusion of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017), things began to take a turn for Johnny Depp, though. Allegations from ex-wife Amber Heard took Johnny Depp through two separate court trials, finally ending with him being declared a victor in the 2022 defamation trial against Heard. Depp then moved to Europe and played several concerts with his band, the Hollywood Vampires, which features Alice Cooper and Joe Perry. He also starred in Jeanne Du Barry (2024), and is now directing a movie, titled Modi, which stars Al Pacino.

Johnny Depp’s career isn’t over, sources have confirmed

Now sitting in the director’s chair, many rumors have swirled that Johnny Depp may be ending his acting career altogether. In a TMZ report, the beloved actor has undergone a complete “transformation” and has “embraced clean eating,” as well as a haircut. Though he has made many of these lifestyle changes, the biggest note from the report has to do with his acting career.

“Sources close to Johnny tell TMZ … the Oscar nominee isn’t done with performing in front of the camera, but his current passion has been directing the biopic “Modi,” as he’s been very happy being back in the director’s chair.”

Although Johnny Depp isn’t acting currently, this is great news for fans who are still holding out hope that he might one day return to Hollywood and play a role in another blockbuster film. Of course, the most notable franchise that fans want him to reappear in is Pirates of the Caribbean as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Though Disney has shared that they are in the middle of “rebooting” the franchise, no one can deny the amount of backlash the company will receive if they elect to move forward with POTC without Johnny Depp. There have been multitudes of fans who have come forward in support of Johnny Depp over the years, and rebooting the franchise without any of its main characters, likely meaning that Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom will not return either, will not go over well with the vast majority of the fanbase.

However, it’s important to note that as Depp continues to focus on Modi, it becomes even less likely that he’ll return to Pirates of the Caribbean. Though some insiders have claimed that Disney might want the actor to make a cameo in the sixth installment of the franchise, this hasn’t been confirmed by Depp’s party.
