Pixar dropped its first teaser artwork for Toy Story 5, and while fans were expecting to be swept up in nostalgia, many walked away feeling… confused. The image shows a group of familiar toys gearing up for a new adventure—but there’s something off. Or rather, someone’s missing.
Front and center is Jessie, the adventurous yodeling cowgirl introduced in Toy Story 2. And while fans love her, the absence of core characters like Woody, Buzz, Slinky Dog, and the Potato Heads is raising eyebrows.
Where Are Woody and Buzz?
Let’s get this part straight: Tim Allen and Tom Hanks have publicly confirmed they’re returning for Toy Story 5. That should be enough to calm fans down, right? Well, not exactly. The fact that neither character shows up in this first promotional image fuels rumors that Jessie might be stepping into the lead role this time.
In a post-Lightyear, post-live-action Snow White Disney era, some fans are already bracing for this to be another “modern reimagining” rather than a true continuation of what made the original films special.

Fans Are Picking Up on a Pattern
Over the last few years, Disney and Pixar have faced criticism for prioritizing themes over storytelling. When beloved characters are pushed aside in favor of new leads—often female—some viewers feel like they’re being served a message instead of a movie.
Jessie deserves more screen time, no question. But does giving her the spotlight mean classic characters have to fade into the background? That’s where things get tricky. It wouldn’t be the first time a major franchise shifted gears to spotlight a “feminine hero,” but it’s also starting to feel predictable.

What Kind of Story Are We Getting?
There’s still plenty we don’t know. This could be a red herring—a teaser designed to get people talking while the plot remains under wraps. Maybe Woody and Buzz play a considerable role, and this image just sets up a side story.
But the concern is genuine. Fans have seen this before. When studios try too hard to modernize something classic, it often feels forced, even if the intent is good.

Don’t Forget What Made It Great
At its core, Toy Story has always been about friendship, loyalty, and finding your place in the world. Jessie can absolutely be a part of that legacy, but if this fifth installment shifts the spotlight too far, fans might feel like they’re watching a different story altogether.
Until we get more details, the only thing certain is that Toy Story 5 has some big expectations to meet—and not just from Jessie’s fans, but from everyone who grew up with these toys.

Movies goers need to get a grip. Re Snow White…Have any of you ever read the original Brothers Grimm “Snow White”? Wasn’t the same as the “original” Disney Movie. Snow White’s mother not stepmother was the jealous one and the evile mother aka stepmother did not die like in the Disney movie. She attended Snow White’s wedding, was recongnized by the prince and made to wear iron shoes heated in a fire and dance until she dies. So Disney took liberties, changed the story a bit to fit the times. The most recent Disney Snow White, I enjoyed the updates and children of today can enjoy, unless it’s dissed by adults! Toy story? For goodness sakes give the movie a chance and if Jessie the lead character, then good for her. I don’t want to see the same tired theme over and over again. If that’s what the public wants, then don’t make sequels.
