The road to Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has been anything but straightforward, and the latest updates suggest that Disney’s next voyage into the franchise may still be some distance away.
Since Dead Men Tell No Tales debuted in 2017, the studio has offered only intermittent updates about the future of the series. Fans have remained eager for news, particularly regarding the fate of Captain Jack Sparrow. While new rumors hint at a significant shift in storytelling, competing priorities may be slowing the project’s overall momentum.
The Pirates of the Caribbean series began with 2003’s The Curse of the Black Pearl, a film that exceeded expectations and transformed a theme park attraction into a major cinematic property. Central to its success was Johnny Depp’s performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a role that became deeply associated with the franchise.
Over time, the films introduced a broader ensemble, including Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann and Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner. The franchise’s financial success was substantial, with global box office totals reaching into the billions.
However, the path forward shifted dramatically following Depp’s legal disputes. Disney chose to distance itself from the actor amid the controversy. Although Depp later secured a legal victory in 2022, uncertainty continues to surround his potential involvement in future installments. The actor has also publicly expressed hesitation about returning.
Despite these challenges, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has maintained that another film is in development. Orlando Bloom has also indicated that discussions have taken place, though no deals have been finalized. At various points, Disney has considered multiple creative directions. A spinoff featuring Margot Robbie was once in development, but that version of the project now appears to be on hold.
More recently, reports have suggested a different approach: introducing Jack Sparrow’s son as a central figure. This concept would allow the franchise to evolve while preserving a connection to its established mythology.
There are also indications that an initial film could include returning characters before shifting focus entirely to a new generation.
While the creative direction remains under discussion, external factors may be having an equally significant impact.
Bruckheimer previously acknowledged that Pirates 6 and Top Gun 3 were effectively competing for attention. “According to Bruckheimer, Pirates 6 is currently competing directly with another major sequel project he’s producing: Top Gun 3,” Inside the Magic previously reported. “He described it as ‘a horse race,' saying Top Gun is ‘a hair ahead' right now.”
That competition now appears to be resolved. Top Gun 3 has officially been confirmed at CinemaCon, with Tom Cruise set to return. With that project actively moving forward, it’s likely taking precedence in terms of resources and scheduling.
As a result, Pirates of the Caribbean 6 may be progressing more slowly than anticipated. One of the biggest unknowns remains whether Johnny Depp will reprise his role. While Bruckheimer has voiced support for his return, Disney has not publicly committed to bringing the actor back.
At the same time, the reported focus on a younger protagonist suggests the studio is preparing for a version of the franchise that does not rely entirely on Sparrow.
Disney’s broader box office strategy also plays a role in shaping the film’s trajectory. With rising production costs and increased scrutiny around major releases, the studio faces pressure to carefully evaluate its next steps.
A hybrid approach—combining familiar characters with new ones—could help bridge the gap between longtime fans and new audiences. However, striking that balance is far from simple. If the film leans too heavily on legacy elements, it may struggle to justify its existence. On the other hand, a complete reinvention risks alienating the audience that made the franchise successful.
For now, Pirates of the Caribbean 6 remains in development, but there is little indication that production is imminent.
With Top Gun 3 gaining momentum and key creative decisions still unresolved, Disney appears to be taking a cautious approach. Whether the next installment features Jack Sparrow, introduces his rumored son, or heads in a completely different direction is still unclear.
What is evident, however, is that the franchise has reached a pivotal moment. The next move will determine not only the future of Pirates of the Caribbean but also how it evolves for a new generation of viewers.
