Disney fans will always be divided by something. But in recent years, even the most loyal Disney fans have been looking back at the latest releases and thought to themselves, “Man, these movies suck!”
Many an analyst has recently begun to question the stability of The Walt Disney Company’s movie-making abilities, and who can blame them? It seems that everything coming out of Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios has been either a live-action remake or a major flop.
Pixar’s newest feature film, Elemental (2023), had already been receiving criticism before it even arrived on Disney+, and don’t even get us started on Wish (2023)!
Of course, everybody has their reasons for why Disney movies suck nowadays, but regardless of the reason, it is unlikely that we Disney fans will see any improvement at the box office and Disney+ for several years. And we fans are going to have to stick it out.
Disney Movies Greenlit Years in Advance
Walt Disney Studios’ situation is not going to improve because, quite frankly, it can’t. Every movie takes years to produce. Sure, we get excited when any new project gets official confirmation, but that announcement comes long after it was greenlit internally and long before its official release (which is NOT a determination of when the movie was completed).
On top of that, we have to take into account the scores of projects announced before Disney’s now-infamous “Chapek Era.”
Returning CEO Bob Iger has insisted on returning both control and accountability of success to the creative storytellers employed by The Walt Disney Company, and he has already made progress in that direction, restructuring the company.
But there is only so much development already in progress in which he can intervene. Everything else coming down the pipe is probably going to have to be taken on the chin.
But there are other movies in early-enough stages of development that allow for complete scrubbing or complete rewrites, and that I have no doubt will help raise the bar of Disney movies back to where it needs to be. It is just a matter of time.
In the meantime, though, all we can do as fans is hope that enough time is left for the upcoming Disney film remakes to be better than they were going to be and that new ideas for another Disney Renaissance are on the horizon once again.
