Marvel Studios may be facing a scheduling problem on the most consequential project in its current slate. A new report suggests that Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) may not start principal photography until February 2027, a timeline that would leave little room to meet its December 2027 release and could force the studio to rethink the order of its upcoming films.

A Two-Film Plan With High Stakes
Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) rests on a pair of ensemble films, Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars. Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), are behind the camera for both. The studio is counting on the filmmaking duo to rebuild momentum after several years of uneven box office and critical performance.
The stakes extend beyond ticket sales. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has described Secret Wars as the vehicle for consolidating the MCU into a single timeline, which makes it one of the most structurally significant releases in the studio’s history. Doomsday, meanwhile, brings back Robert Downey Jr., this time as Victor Von Doom/Doctor Doom rather than Tony Stark/Iron Man.
Russo Brothers Offer Few Specifics
Following San Diego Comic-Con, Anthony Russo said Doomsday had reached the late stages of post-production, with the team still completing the score, sound mix, and other final elements. He confirmed that prep work on Secret Wars had begun but did not commit to a start date for filming, saying only that it was getting closer.

Conflicting Accounts From the Summer
The uncertainty dates back to August, when reports indicated that Secret Wars had started shooting at a UK production facility. UK production tracker Filmbase then listed the shoot as suspended for roughly five weeks, with work expected to resume in late September.
Industry insiders Daniel Richtman and MTTSH disputed that account. Richtman said Doomsday was still in reshoots and that Secret Wars was slated to start at the end of September. MTTSH likewise said the footage being captured was additional photography for Doomsday. If accurate, the reported pause had been assigned to the wrong production.
February 2027 Now in the Frame
The late-September window has since passed without any confirmation that cameras are rolling. Richtman now reports that Secret Wars may not begin filming until February 2027.
That shift would compress the schedule considerably. Avengers-scale productions rely on lengthy post-production periods to accommodate visual effects, and a February start would give Marvel far less time than it allotted to earlier team-up films.

Implications for Marvel’s 2027 and 2028 Slate
A 2027 start date would make the December 2027 release nearly impossible to hold, pushing Secret Wars into 2028. That would leave Marvel without a theatrical release for an entire calendar year, an unusual gap for a studio that has delivered films almost annually since the franchise launched.
The effects would likely spread further. Marvel’s release schedule is closely sequenced, and a delay to its tentpole could disrupt the films positioned around it, including the upcoming X-Men film, which does not yet have a release date. Marvel confirmed that project at D23 Expo 2026 and revealed most of its cast, including Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, a role she first played in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026). Because mutants are expected to drive the MCU after Secret Wars, any slip in the Avengers schedule would likely push back the X-Men’s debut as well.
Early Story Details
Unverified leaks said to come from Doomsday indicate that its finale could introduce Battleworld, the fractured reality expected to serve as the setting for Secret Wars. Earlier reports described a world in which Doctor Doom holds sway over most of the heroes and villains.
Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus likened the concept to WandaVision (2021), describing a medieval-style reality similar to the What If…? (2021) episode that recast the Avengers in 1602. Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch) has not been confirmed to return.

The Official Position
For now, Marvel’s calendar remains unchanged. Avengers: Doomsday is still scheduled for December 2026, and Secret Wars still holds its December 2027 slot. If Richtman’s report holds up, however, audiences may wait longer than planned for both the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga and the arrival of the X-Men.
Until Marvel Studios comments, the February 2027 date is best viewed as a strong possibility rather than a settled fact, with further clarity likely as Doomsday’s release approaches.
