Guests lounging near the Hippy Dippy Pool at Disney’s Pop Century Resort last week got an unexpected dose of romance—and controversy.

According to a TikTok video posted by @hannahg28362, a couple exchanged vows in the resort’s courtyard area just outside the pool gates. The small ceremony included an officiant, the couple themselves, and someone recording the event on a cell phone. There were no guests, no floral arrangements, and no Disney Cast Members in attendance—just a brief, private moment in a very public setting.
@hannahg28362 congrats to the happy couple 🤍 y’all go see Jenny at Pop #disneyworld
The setting may have been sweet, but the move almost certainly violated Disney’s resort policies.
Disney’s Ban on Unofficial Ceremonies
The Walt Disney World Resort’s property rules explicitly prohibit “unauthorized events, speeches, or demonstrations” anywhere on its grounds. That language covers anything from political rallies to impromptu performances—and yes, unapproved weddings.
These rules are designed to control crowd flow, keep guest areas accessible, and prevent liability concerns. A wedding ceremony staged without Disney’s knowledge could disrupt other visitors, create bottlenecks in high-traffic areas, or interfere with scheduled activities.
Pop Century’s Hippy Dippy Pool area isn’t—and never has been—on Disney’s approved list of wedding venues.
The Official Route: Disney Fairy Tale Weddings
Couples who want to tie the knot on Disney property are generally directed to Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings, the company’s in-house event planning service. The program offers nearly 50 different venues across Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, including:
-
Disney’s Wedding Pavilion at the Grand Floridian, with direct views of Cinderella Castle
-
Italy Isola at EPCOT, overlooking the World Showcase Lagoon
-
Disney’s BoardWalk Inn waterfront and gazebos
-
Coronado Springs Resort plazas and courtyards
Official Disney weddings start around $15,000 and can exceed $100,000 for larger events. Packages include the venue, catering, floral and décor, transportation, photography, entertainment, and full planning services—right down to a day-of coordinator.
By going through Disney, couples can ensure their ceremony is fully sanctioned, professionally managed, and integrated into the resort’s guest flow.
Why Some Couples Skip the Official Route
The Pop Century wedding was small, stripped-down, and far from the six-figure spectacle Disney often produces. That might have been the point.
Unofficial ceremonies can be tempting for a few reasons:
-
Lower cost: Official Disney packages are out of reach for many couples.
-
Short notice: Official venues often book months or even years in advance.
-
Preference for simplicity: Not everyone wants a full-scale wedding with 100 guests and a Cinderella carriage.
Still, holding an unapproved wedding on Disney property is risky. Security or resort management could interrupt the event, and in some cases, guests could be escorted off property.
The Setting: Pop Century Resort
Disney’s Pop Century Resort celebrates pop culture from the 1950s through the 1990s with oversized icons like giant yo-yos, bowling pins, and rotary phones. The Hippy Dippy Pool—the site of the unsanctioned wedding—is the resort’s central swimming area, themed around flower power and 1960s colors.
While undeniably vibrant, it’s not an obvious wedding backdrop. Families splash in the pool throughout the day, games and activities are announced over loudspeakers, and the space is rarely quiet. But for some couples, the nostalgia and informality may outweigh tradition.
Disney Weddings: More Than a Backdrop
Disney weddings aren’t just about location—they’re about storytelling. Couples booking through Disney can customize every detail, from having characters appear at the reception to serving themed desserts, to scheduling fireworks displays during the vows.
But those premium touches come at a premium price, and Disney strictly enforces its exclusivity over wedding ceremonies on property. This control helps the company maintain its brand image and ensure that any wedding at a Disney location meets its service and quality standards.
An Unlikely Disney Memory
For the couple who wed at Pop Century, the ceremony was brief, unconventional, and—at least according to the rules—unauthorized. But it will likely remain one of their most memorable days.
And for the other resort guests lounging near the pool that afternoon, it was a rare scene: a wedding without the mouse’s official blessing, unfolding in the middle of a vacation afternoon.
It’s a reminder that while Disney may be known for highly orchestrated magic, sometimes the most surprising moments happen completely off script.
