Villain Revealed for Solo Scarlet Witch Movie Coming in 2026: Report

Rumors of a Scarlet Witch solo film have surfaced recently as speculation mounts regarding Elizabeth Olsen’s potential return as Wanda Maximoff to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While neither Disney nor Marvel Studios have officially confirmed the film, it’s rumored that a new movie focused on the Scarlet Witch will arrive in 2026, setting the stage for Olsen to reprise one of the franchise's most powerful characters.

The Scarlet Witch in the MCU

Elizabeth Olsen’s journey as Wanda Maximoff began with her post-credits appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and expanded in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), where she appeared alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who played her brother Pietro Maximoff.

Over time, Wanda grew into a beloved figure within the MCU, particularly noted for her raw power and emotional depth. Her role in the climactic battle against Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019) solidified her standing as one of the franchise’s most formidable heroes. During Endgame, Wanda’s might forced Thanos to take extreme measures to stop her from single-handedly overpowering him, a testament to her growing strength.

Wanda’s narrative became more intricate and emotional in WandaVision in 2021, Marvel Studios’ first Disney+ series. After Vision’s death in Infinity War, Wanda’s grief became central to the show’s plot as she constructed an alternate reality in Westview to preserve her life with Vision.

WandaVision broke away from the traditional superhero formula, emphasizing Wanda’s internal struggles and exploring her trauma. The show also introduced a major antagonist in Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness, a powerful witch who played a key role in Wanda’s journey toward accepting her identity as the Scarlet Witch–if only for her own gain.

Despite the complex dynamics between Agatha and Wanda in WandaVision, the story did not end there. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), directed by Sam Raimi, Wanda embraced her darker side, becoming a full-fledged villain. Her desire to reunite with her children, Billy and Tommy, who were born from her magical reality in Westview, led her to pursue America Chavez, a young hero with the ability to traverse the Multiverse.

Wanda sought to steal America’s powers in the hopes of finding a version of her sons in another universe. The film’s climactic battle ended with Wanda seemingly sacrificing herself to destroy the Darkhold, a corruptive magical artifact. However, Wanda’s death remains ambiguous, leaving open the possibility of her return.

A Solo Scarlet Witch Film?

The uncertainty surrounding Wanda’s fate has fueled excitement for a rumored solo film centered on her character. Reports suggest that a Scarlet Witch movie could debut in 2026, with writers Jac Schaeffer and Megan McDonnell, who worked on WandaVision and Agatha All Along, attached to the project.

According to sources, this film could see the return of familiar faces from Wanda’s past, including her formidable foe, Agatha Harkness. With Hahn reprising her role as Agatha in the upcoming Disney+ series Agatha All Along, the connection to Wanda’s future in the MCU is clear. There’s also speculation that the new movie could explore the Witches' Road storyline, where Agatha attempts to regain the powers Wanda stripped from her at the end of WandaVision.

A possible showdown between Wanda and Agatha could serve as a centerpiece for the film, as the two characters share a deep and complex history. Adding intrigue is the potential inclusion of Wanda’s son, Billy Maximoff, played by Joe Locke. Billy’s role as part of Agatha’s coven may open the door for a deeper exploration of Wanda’s family, further entwining the characters’ fates.

Although the specifics of the plot remain unconfirmed, reports suggest that the movie will slot into the MCU's schedule sometime between Avengers: Doomsday (2026)  (formerly Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) and 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars—or possibly after the latter. The MCU's release schedule now includes multiple open slots in 2026 and 2027, providing an opportune window for the Scarlet Witch film to premiere.

That said, the studio recently announced three new MCU movies for 2028, so the popular sorcerer could find a home there.

Elizabeth Olsen's Return

Elizabeth Olsen has expressed interest in returning to the role of Wanda Maximoff under the right circumstances. In a recent interview with FM 104, Olsen shared her thoughts on reprising the character: “It's a character I love going back to when there's a way to use her well, and I think I've been lucky when I started; I was used well… and they kind of didn't know what to do with me for a second there!” Her comments indicate that while Olsen is open to returning, the story must align with her vision for the character’s development.

Given her comments and the ongoing rumors–including the confirmation that she “may” be dead–it seems likely that Wanda's journey is far from over. Whether through a feature film or additional appearances in Disney+ series, the Scarlet Witch's arc could continue to unfold in increasingly fascinating and complex ways.

As fans eagerly await official confirmation of the film, anticipation continues to build. The chance to see Wanda take center stage once again, potentially clashing with Agatha Harkness and dealing with the fallout from her Multiverse exploits, the possibility of expanding her family’s storyline, and seeing Billy Maximoff grow into his own character now that his powers have been revealed offer even more depth to explore.

What’s Next for the MCU?

The MCU’s future remains fluid, with significant changes impacting its upcoming releases. Marvel Studios has already revealed plans for three new movies in 2028, and with Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon, the interconnected nature of the franchise’s Multiverse saga continues to evolve. Amidst all the speculation, one thing remains certain: the demand for a solo Scarlet Witch movie is strong.

Should Wanda Maximoff return in 2026 as the lead of her own film, it would not only provide closure to her arc but also set up exciting new possibilities for the MCU. Fans are waiting with bated breath for the chance to witness the Scarlet Witch's power unleashed on the big screen once again.
