Actor Zac Efron has been a prominent fixture in Hollywood for more than two decades. The actor has appeared in 70 films and television shows over the years, but he is probably most well-known for the 2006 movie that shot him to superstardom: the Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical.

Since then, Efron has appeared in a lot of other notable releases, including Hairspray (2007), 17 Again (2009), Charlie St. Cloud (2010), Neighbors (2014), Baywatch (2017), and The Greatest Showman (2017). In late June, his newest movie, A Family Affair, also starring Nicole Kidman and Joey King, was released on Netflix.

Efron has been keeping himself incredibly busy, but he always manages to find some time to escape and relax. Recently, he was spotted enjoying the sun and sand on the Spanish island of Ibiza.

However, instead of being able to completely relax and escape the stress, Efron wound up in the hospital after a swimming accident.

According to reports, the actor was enjoying a swimming pool at the villa he was staying at. He had what his reps are calling a “swimming incident” and was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. While little information was given about what happened, TMZ reported that hotel staff found him and pulled Efron out of the pool.

Thankfully, Mr. Efron appears to be fine, with no serious injuries. He spent the night in the hospital, but shortly after his release, he posted a message on his Instagram stories saying that he was happy and healthy. He also thanked fans for all their well-wishes.

We are now learning more about just how lucky Efron was, as things could have quickly turned tragic.

According to an insider who spoke to PEOPLE, Efron ingested a large amount of water when his chest hit the bottom of the swimming pool. Thankfully, villa security noticed that he was in distress and acted quickly.

The source adds that the High School Musical alum was dazed momentarily, and therefore taken to a hospital out of an abundance of caution.

He then had X-rays done on his chest to ensure no water remained in his lungs, the source adds. Though the former Disney star was medically cleared within hours, he decided to wait at the hospital until the paparazzi who had followed him to the hospital left.

Efron is back in the United States and getting ready for his next starring roles. He is set to appear in two films that are currently in pre-production — Famous and the remake of Three Men and a Baby.

We are glad to hear that Mr. Efron is safe and suffered no ill effects from his swimming accident.
