Tragedy Strikes at Six Flags Magic Mountain: Family Seeks Answers After Fatal Rollercoaster Injury

On June 23, 2022, 22-year-old Christopher Hawley and his family were enjoying the excitement of the X2 rollercoaster, one of the park’s most popular attractions. However, they had no idea that this exhilarating ride would be the last one Christopher would ever take.

The moment was supposed to be unforgettable—but for all the wrong reasons. As the coaster neared its end, something went terribly wrong. A sudden and violent jolt caused Christopher to lose his balance and, eventually, his life. Now, more than two years later, the Hawley family is still waiting for answers. So, what happened on that fateful day, and why are they demanding justice?

Christopher Hawley, a recent San Diego State University graduate, was at Six Flags Magic Mountain with his younger brother, Alex, and their cousin. The trio decided to hop on X2, a high-speed rollercoaster with rotating seats, a 215-foot drop, and speeds that can reach 76 mph. Known for its intense flips and disorienting movements, the ride offers an experience that’s both thrilling and a bit terrifying.

A Sudden Loss of Consciousness

According to the lawsuit filed by the Hawley family, the ride took a terrifying turn when it suddenly came to a violent halt just as it neared the end of the course. The abrupt stop, described as “sudden, abrupt, and violent,” threw Christopher and the other riders into a state of disarray. His brother and cousin noticed him struggling to stay upright as they made their way off the ride. Christopher appeared disoriented, holding onto the railing for stability, and began walking unsteadily down the ramp. When they reached him, he mumbled that his head hurt.

It was then that Christopher collapsed.

What followed next would change the family’s life forever. After the sudden fall, Christopher kneeled down, slumped over to one side, and lost consciousness. His family rushed him to the nearest medical facility, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, in Valencia, where doctors conducted a CT scan that revealed the heartbreaking truth: Christopher had suffered a traumatic brain injury, a catastrophic right subdural hematoma, caused by the violent stop on X2.

Seeking Justice for Christopher

Despite being in excellent health before the incident, Christopher’s injury was too severe to recover from. The next day, June 24, Christopher passed away, leaving behind a devastated family who was left grappling with the unimaginable. News outlets like the Los Angeles Times, ABC7 Los Angeles, and more have already reported on this tragic incident.

The grief-stricken Hawleys are now fighting for justice. They’ve filed a lawsuit against Six Flags Magic Mountain, accusing the park of operating the ride negligently, having a design defect, and failing to warn customers of the potential dangers associated with X2. In their suit, the Hawleys are not only seeking justice for their son but also hope to ensure that such a tragedy doesn’t happen to anyone else.

“We want to make sure that that ride isn’t going to kill somebody else,” said William Hawley, Christopher’s father, in a video conference call. “They won’t explain to us what happened. They’ve essentially gone dark. The only way we’ve been able to contact them is through our attorney.”

A History of Concerns

Six Flags Magic Mountain, however, has declined to comment on the pending litigation. The park has referred all inquiries to their legal team, which has yet to release any official statement. According to The Orange County Register, the park remains tight-lipped about the situation, further adding to the family’s frustration.

But this isn’t the first time X2 has been linked to serious injuries. The family’s attorney, Ari Friedman, has stated that the ride has been involved in other incidents where riders sustained injuries such as whiplash, head and neck injuries, and more. These incidents, Friedman claims, are a result of the ride’s sudden jolting movements.

In 2021, a woman from San Bernardino filed a lawsuit against Six Flags Magic Mountain, claiming that a ride on X2 caused her “shock and injury to her nervous systems.” At the time, the park claimed that “expert testing” proved the woman’s injuries were not caused by the rollercoaster. However, a judge eventually dismissed Magic Mountain from the lawsuit, and the case was settled outside of court.

The Impact on Rollercoaster Safety

The Hawley family’s legal team believes that X2’s design, which features rotating seats and intense movements, may contribute to its dangerous nature. As they continue to investigate the events of June 2022, they anticipate seeking $10 million in compensatory damages, pending the results of the ride’s inspection.

This tragic incident raises significant questions about the safety of thrill rides and the responsibility of theme parks to protect their visitors. While rollercoasters like X2 are designed to thrill, they also carry inherent risks. The sudden movements and extreme drops are part of what makes them so popular—but they also present a danger if the ride is not designed or maintained properly.

What makes this case particularly alarming is the fact that the Hawleys believe Six Flags Magic Mountain has been unresponsive and secretive regarding their investigation into the incident. If the ride did, in fact, have a design flaw, it raises the issue of how much responsibility theme parks should bear for injuries sustained on their rides, especially when there’s a history of complaints.

What Happens Next for This Major Six Flags Theme Park?

As the legal battle continues, all eyes are on the upcoming trial, scheduled for October 13. Will the Hawley family receive the justice they seek? And perhaps more importantly, will Six Flags Magic Mountain be held accountable for a ride that some argue should never have been allowed to operate in its current form?

The tragedy has already begun to raise awareness about rollercoaster safety, prompting other park-goers to ask: Are theme parks doing enough to ensure the safety of their guests, or are they more focused on the thrill of the ride than the risks involved?

The story of Christopher Hawley is one that underscores the darker side of amusement parks, a world built on excitement but not without its potential dangers. As the Hawley family searches for answers, their fight may change the way rollercoasters are designed—and the way theme parks operate—in the future.
