Universal Orlando’s King Kong Ride Faces Extended Closure as Its Future Remains Unclear

More Expansions Taking Place Soon?

Skull Island: Reign of Kong remains closed at Universal Islands of Adventure, extending an unexplained outage for one of the park’s major dark rides. The King Kong attraction is still listed by Universal Orlando as part of the park’s attraction lineup, but there is no publicly announced reopening date or permanent-closure announcement. That distinction matters: the ride is unavailable, but Universal has not said it is gone for good.

The prolonged downtime is drawing extra attention because it comes during a period of unusually visible change across Universal Orlando Resort. Recent permanent closures elsewhere at the resort, construction in Islands of Adventure, and major refurbishment work nearby make an open-ended Kong shutdown more conspicuous than a routine day-long technical delay.

Skull Island: Reign of Kong Remains Closed

Wait-time tracking has observed Skull Island: Reign of Kong continuously closed beginning September 1 and through September 10, while the attraction was also showing closed on September 11. Inside Universal has separately called attention to the extended shutdown. Neither observation establishes why the ride is closed, and neither amounts to a permanent-closure announcement from Universal.

Universal’s own current materials still identify Reign of Kong as an Islands of Adventure attraction. Its official interactive park map describes the jungle expedition and King Kong encounter, while Universal’s 2026 rider guide continues to include the attraction and its access requirements.

For guests, the practical consequence is straightforward: anyone visiting specifically for Kong should not assume it will be operating until Universal provides an update or the attraction actually returns to service. The cause, repair scope, and reopening timetable remain unknown publicly.

Why a Kong Closure Gets Attention Right Now

Reign of Kong opened July 13, 2016, bringing a large-scale King Kong experience back to Universal Orlando. Universal described the attraction at launch as a trackless expedition aboard 40-foot-long, 17-ton vehicles, culminating in a face-to-face encounter with a Kong figure nearly three stories tall.

The ride’s mix of physical environments, large ride vehicles, projection-heavy action sequences, 4-D effects, and an animatronic finale also makes it representative of a particular era of Universal attraction design. That has helped fuel speculation about its long-term future, especially as Universal changes older parts of its Orlando parks.

But speculation is the key word. There is currently no verified announcement that Universal intends to demolish Reign of Kong, replace it, expand Jurassic Park into its footprint, or permanently retire it because of its screen-based elements.

Universal Has Recently Made Permanent Closures Clear

The concern does not exist in a vacuum. Universal Orlando permanently closed Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit in 2025, and demolition began quickly after its final operating day. More recently, Fast & Furious: Supercharged permanently closed at Universal Studios Florida in August 2026.

Those examples are useful precisely because Universal’s handling of confirmed permanent closures differs from Kong’s present status. Fast & Furious had a confirmed final operating date before it shut down, while Universal had previously confirmed Rip Ride Rockit would close to make way for a new experience.

Islands of Adventure is changing, too. Poseidon’s Fury, which permanently closed in 2023, has since been demolished as The Lost Continent continues to disappear. Universal has also confirmed future work affecting Toon Lagoon, adding to the sense that older sections of the park are in motion.

None of those projects proves Reign of Kong is next. They do, however, explain why an unexplained extended closure is being watched more closely than it might have been a few years ago.

Nearby Jurassic Park Work Adds to the Questions

The attraction’s location makes the timing more interesting. Skull Island sits beside Jurassic Park, where Jurassic Park River Adventure has been undergoing a lengthy 2026 refurbishment. Inside the Magic has tracked the extensive Jurassic Park River Adventure work, which has kept another major attraction in that part of Islands of Adventure unavailable.

Thunder Falls Terrace in Jurassic Park also closed permanently this summer, with Universal planning a new full-service dining concept for the location. That means guests walking through this side of Islands of Adventure are already encountering a park landscape in transition.

Still, there is no verified evidence tying the Kong outage to the River Adventure project, the restaurant redevelopment, or a larger Jurassic expansion. Treating simultaneous closures as proof of a coordinated replacement plan would go beyond the available evidence.

What Guests Should Watch for Next

The most important signal will come from Universal Orlando itself. A reopening date, refurbishment notice, change to the attraction’s official listing, construction permits, or a formal replacement announcement would materially change the story. Until then, the strongest verifiable description is that Skull Island: Reign of Kong is closed with its reopening timeline publicly unknown.

There is also precedent for caution when interpreting silence. A ride can experience extended technical or maintenance downtime without being permanently retired, while a true permanent closure generally produces more concrete evidence before demolition or replacement can responsibly be reported as fact.

For now, King Kong’s future at Islands of Adventure remains unresolved, not decided in public. Guests planning upcoming Universal Orlando visits should check the official resort app and attraction information close to their park day. If the closure continues, the longer outage will naturally invite more questions—but the next meaningful development will be evidence of reopening, documented physical change, or an announcement from Universal, not the rumor itself.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
