In 1995, Robin Williams starred in a film that would become iconic among millennials: Jumanji. Williams played Alan Parrish, a young boy who discovers a mysterious board game called Jumanji. When he plays it with a friend, he gets sucked into the game after rolling a die that reads, “In the jungle, you must wait until the dice read five or eight.”

Decades later, Alan is freed from the game when two children, Judy and Peter, who live in Alan’s former home, find Jumanji in the attic. They must navigate various challenges, including a stampede, to complete the game and finally release Alan, restoring his life.

Despite its popularity and cult following, a sequel to Jumanji was not produced, although Sony Pictures did propose one in the 1990s shortly after the original film’s release.

Two years after Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Sony launched the sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level. This film brought back Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart and placed them in the midst of a brand-new adventure.

Following the film’s release, Johnson announced that a third installment was in development, with work officially beginning in 2020. However, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted progress.

Now, four years later, we finally have news about the release date for the third film in this exciting Jumanji franchise!

In a highly anticipated announcement, Sony Pictures confirmed that Jumanji 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on December 11, 2026. This release date aligns with the studio’s tradition of launching previous films in the franchise during the pre-Christmas season, allowing it to capitalize on holiday audiences.

Per a report from Deadline:

Jumanji 3 is happening on December 11, 2026, Sony has just announced. That’s the same pre-Christmas slot that Sony has launched the previous films in its Jumanji franchise. The movie will have full command of Imax and PLF screens that weekend.

Director Jake Kasdan and star posse Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan are expected to return and are in talks.

Nothing else is dated for that December 2026 frame, but Jumanji 3 opens one week before Disney’s untitled Star Wars movie and Warner Bros/Legendary’s supposed release of Dune 3 on December 18.

Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan have not confirmed if they will reprise their roles, but they are expected to return for the third film.

Jake Kasdan will return to the director’s chair, having successfully helmed the last two films, while producers Matt Tolmach and Dany Garcia are also returning to help bring the next installment to life.

While specific plot details for Jumanji 3 remain under wraps, speculation suggests the narrative may focus on Jurgen the Brutal, a character introduced in Jumanji: The Next Level. Discussions are underway about exploring this antagonist’s backstory and who controls the game, potentially leading to new twists within the established universe.
