Sony’s Spider-Man franchise hasn't always hit the jackpot – and now it's entering another period of change.
The studio has spent years trying to build beyond Peter Parker, with mixed results across film and television. While Tom Holland’s Spider-Man remains one of Sony’s most valuable characters, several projects built around the wider Spider-Man universe have struggled to find the same audience.
Sony’s arrangement with Marvel Studios has been the clear exception. Since 2015, the companies have shared Holland’s version of Peter Parker, allowing the character to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe while Sony continues financing and distributing his solo movies.
That partnership has produced Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Far From Home (2019), No Way Home (2021), and Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026).
Outside the MCU, however, Sony has taken a broader approach.
The studio launched movies focused on characters including Venom, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter. It also expanded onto television through a partnership with Amazon, opening another avenue for characters connected to Spider-Man.
One of the biggest products of that partnership arrived earlier this year.
Sony Pulls the Plug on ‘Spider-Noir’
Amazon has canceled Spider-Noir after one season, ending Nicolas Cage’s first regular television role only months after the series premiered on Prime Video.
Set in 1930s New York, the show followed Ben Reilly, a struggling private investigator forced to reckon with his past as the city’s only superhero following a personal tragedy.
The cancellation is notable because Spider-Noir was hardly a critical failure.
The series currently holds a 92% critics score and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also received 11 Emmy nominations, making it Prime Video’s most-nominated series this year.
But despite the strong reviews, Spider-Noir quickly slipped out of Prime Video’s daily Top 10 ranking and failed to generate the kind of sustained conversation that often helps expensive streaming shows secure renewals.
Production costs may also have weighed against it.
Sony and Amazon have not revealed an official budget, but the series was filmed in both black and white and color, making it a more complicated production than a conventional superhero drama.
For now, Cage’s version of the character appears to have reached the end of the road.
Sony’s television ambitions, however, have not.
Another Spider-Man Project Is Moving Forward
The cancellation comes as Sony and Amazon continue developing other television projects based on characters from Spider-Man’s universe.
At least one of those projects is reportedly nearing a series order.
No plot details or casting information have been announced, meaning Sony’s next small-screen Marvel series remains largely under wraps. The planned shows are expected to debut on MGM+ before later becoming available on Prime Video.
That gives Sony a clear path forward even without Spider-Noir Season 2.
The decision also comes at a very different moment for the company’s main Spider-Man franchise.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become one of the biggest movies in box-office history, passing $2.3 billion worldwide and $900 million in North America.
Holland also appears unlikely to leave the role anytime soon.
Asked about another movie starring the actor, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said there are “always plans,” while confirming that Brand New Day leads into “more Spider-Man films.”
Producer Amy Pascal has also discussed Spider-Man 5, although Sony and Marvel have not formally announced when another solo film will arrive.
Before that happens, the MCU has two major Avengers movies on the way.
Holland is not expected to appear in Avengers: Doomsday this December, although rumors have repeatedly linked Tobey Maguire’s version of Spider-Man to the film.
Holland’s Peter Parker is instead reportedly expected to play an important role in Avengers: Secret Wars, currently scheduled for December 2027. The post-credits scene of Brand New Day hinted at the character's potential appearance on Battleworld, the main setting for the Secret Wars crossover events.
The actor has also started hinting at his eventual exit from the franchise, noting that he'd like to play a similar role to his successor as Robert Downey Jr. did for him.
