WDWNT reported on June 11 that a new set of Star Wars trading pins with redesigned cardboard backing cards had appeared at the 20th Century Music Company Shop on Main Street, U.S.A., at Disneyland Park. The updated design replaces the plain white cards with blue “Disney Pins” branding that collectors are accustomed to.

The new backing cards are predominantly black, featuring a shiny black “Disney Pins” logo at the bottom and the classic Star Wars logo rendered in white Aurebesh font at the top. A gray geometric pattern frames the design. The overall effect is considerably more polished and franchise-specific than the standard generic backing that has long been the default for open-edition Disney Trading Pins.

The updated cards were first noticed on Stormtrooper, Darth Vader, R2-D2, Mandalorian, and Ewok pins. Not every Star Wars pin in the Southern California Disney parks has made the switch yet; many throughout Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park, and the Downtown Disney District are still on the old white cardboard backing. The new design is expected to roll out across the full Star Wars pin lineup as existing stock cycles out.

What the New Backing Means for Collectors

Disney Trading Pin collectors typically read a customized backing card as a signal that a pin is limited-edition or limited-release. However, the Star Wars pins featuring the new cardboard design are open editions — meaning they won't be disappearing from shelves anytime soon and don't carry the scarcity that usually accompanies specialized packaging.

The most likely trajectory for the updated design is a gradual rollout across all open-edition Star Wars Disney Trading Pins at Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort, and the Disney Store as the old backing cards are depleted. New open-edition, limited-edition, and limited-release Disney Trading Pins are released every Tuesday across both Disney parks and the online Disney Store.
