‘Star Wars’ Rejects “Woke” Criticism by Expanding Upon Divisive Entry

Ubisoft’s “Star Wars Outlaws” made waves when it debuted in 2024, but not necessarily for the right reasons. While the game offered players an expansive open-world Star Wars experience, it was met with mixed reviews due to its underwhelming graphics.

Many fans also heavily criticized the appearance of the game’s lead female protagonist, Kay Vess, describing her as an “uglification” of Humberly Gonzalez, the actress behind the character. This narrative also led to many labeling “Star Wars Outlaws” as being “woke,” a criticism many games in recent years have faced due to their female representation.

And although “Outlaws” topped gaming charts worldwide, its sales fell short of Ubisoft’s projections. Yet, despite the rocky reception, the game continues to have a dedicated following, and now, fans who’ve stuck with the game have more to look forward to.

Ubisoft has announced that, on April 18, 2025, at this year’s Star Wars Celebration (which runs from April 18-20), the gaming giant will preview “Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate’s Fortune”, the upcoming downloadable content (DLC) expansion for the game.

This new story pack, which appears to be doubling as a soft relaunch for the game, promises to add even more depth to the already sprawling open-world environment, with players once again stepping into the boots of Kay Vess (Humberly Gonzalez), the titular scoundrel who’s trying to escape the dangerous criminal underworld to start a new life.

In “A Pirate’s Fortune”, players will also team up with the pirate Hondo Ohnaka, a beloved character from the animated shows, The Clone Wars and Rebels.

Hondo’s reputation precedes him as a pirate with both a dubious sense of honor and a knack for getting into trouble. In this new chapter, Hondo enlists Kay’s help to escape a deadly gang of pirates and steal a treasure that could restore his former glory.

The timing for this new DLC is perfect, as it arrives just as the game is about to celebrate its first anniversary. The teaser, released on the official “Star Wars Outlaws” social media channels, promises fans an exciting look at what’s next for the game.

The DLC will be available in spring 2025, and it’s expected to reignite interest in the game among players who have been craving more Star Wars content.

The inclusion of Hondo Ohnaka also adds a layer of nostalgia for longtime fans of Star Wars storytelling, and Ubisoft’s commitment to expanding the game’s universe bodes well for its future. The fanbase might be divided when it comes to opinions on recent films and shows, but “Star Wars Outlaws” has the potential to bridge that gap and reignite excitement in the gaming side of the franchise.
