Why ‘Stranger Things’ Isn’t the Best Sci-Fi Horror Show on Streaming

If you’re a fan of Stranger Things, you’ve likely marveled at its mix of ‘80s nostalgia, supernatural storytelling, and unforgettable characters. But while Hawkins and its Upside Down have garnered worldwide acclaim, another sci-fi horror series, FROM, has been quietly delivering chilling thrills and riveting mysteries of its own.

Premiering on MGM+ in 2022, FROM is a terrifying exploration of a nightmare small town that traps all who enter, leaving its residents desperately searching for a way to escape. The sinister twist? The surrounding forests teem with nocturnal creatures posing as humans, who will stop at nothing to find a way inside the residents’ homes. These horrifying beings unleash unimaginable brutality on anyone who lets them in, but the townsfolk have a mysterious talisman to keep the creatures at bay—unless someone makes the fatal mistake of an invitation.

The series centers on Boyd Stevens, portrayed by Lost alum Harold Perrineau, who serves as the self-appointed sheriff and mayor of this hellish town. Alongside the Matthews family—new arrivals played by Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, Hannah Cheramy, and Simon Webster—Boyd leads the effort to unravel the town’s secrets and discover a way out of their shared nightmare.

Per MGM+, FROM “unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town that traps all those who enter. As the unwilling residents search for a way out, they must also survive the threats of the forest including the terrifying creatures that come out at night.”

Season 1 premiered in February 2022 to widespread acclaim, earning praise for its compelling story, stellar direction, and powerhouse performances. By April 2022, FROM was renewed for a second season, which aired in April 2023. Its continued popularity led to a third season in September 2024, and a fourth season has already been commissioned, further cementing its status as a modern cult classic.

While FROM’s concept may not be entirely original—it’s steeped in Stephen King-esque vibes—it delivers terror and tension in a way that feels both fresh and incredibly effective. The show’s premise of being trapped in a seemingly inescapable town, paired with the ever-present threat of horrifying monsters, strikes a nerve that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Harold Perrineau’s portrayal of Boyd Stevens is especially gripping, anchoring the series with a blend of intensity and vulnerability. The supporting cast, including standout performances from Elizabeth Saunders as Donna Raines and Shaun Majumder as Rudra Khatri, ensures every scene packs a punch.
