Super Bowl Champions Just Threw a Major Theme Park Project Into Uncertainty

Before anyone asks, yes, this is a real story, and yes, Travis Kelce's team is tangentially connected to a Barbie and Hot Wheels theme park being in jeopardy. Welcome to 2026.

Here is what is actually happening.

Start With the Arizona Situation

Mattel Adventure Park was first announced in 2021 with a 2022 opening date in Glendale, Arizona. That became 2023. Then 2024. Then, in late 2025. When late 2025 passed without an opening, Mattel Adventure Park quietly removed any mention of an opening date from its website and replaced it with the two words that theme park fans have learned to treat as a warning sign. Coming soon.

A Mattel Adventure Park representative confirmed to the Arizona Republic in May 2026 that there is no update on an opening timeline. VAI Resort, the larger development in Glendale that the theme park is part of, states on its website that it announces opening dates approximately nine months in advance. As of May 2026, that math puts the potential opening no earlier than February 2027. If the timeline holds. It has not consistently done so.

Now Add Kansas City

When Mattel and Epic Resort Destinations announced the second Mattel Adventure Park in 2024, the location was Bonner Springs, Kansas, as part of a broader entertainment development called Destination KCK. The planned park was genuinely impressive on paper. Two Hot Wheels roller coasters, the Bone Shaker and the Twin Mill Racer. Thomas and Friends: World of Sodor has five family-friendly rides. He-Man vs. Skeletor Laser Tag inside a Castle Grayskull fortress.

An 18-hole mini golf experience drawing from Mattel game brands, including Magic 8 Ball and Pictionary. A large-scale UNO climbing structure. And the full Barbie complex, a larger-than-life Barbie Beach House with hologram technology, a flying theater, and The Barbie Rooftop restaurant and bar.

The original opening target was 2026. That target has passed without a new date being announced.

Enter the Kansas City Chiefs

New reporting has connected the Mattel Adventure Park Kansas City project to ongoing stadium discussions involving the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Royals. The Destination KCK entertainment district in Bonner Springs, where the Mattel park was planned, has become entangled in broader negotiations over where those franchises will build their future stadiums.

When an NFL franchise at the level of the Chiefs, one of the most prominent and culturally visible sports organizations in the country right now, enters a stadium negotiation connected to a development district, the ripple effects on every other project inside that district are real and immediate.

Travis Kelce plays for the Kansas City Chiefs. Taylor Swift has been attending his games since 2023 and the relationship has generated more mainstream sports and entertainment coverage than most actual sporting events.

The Chiefs are not a team that exists quietly in the background of any conversation they are part of. Their stadium discussions are high stakes, publicly scrutinized, and consequential for the Kansas City region's development landscape in ways that extend well beyond football.

The Mattel park got caught in the middle of that.

Where Everything Stands

No updated opening timeline has been announced for the Kansas City location. No official statement has addressed how the stadium discussions specifically affect the Mattel Adventure Park component of the Destination KCK project. The park has not been cancelled. It has entered a state of uncertainty that no public announcement has resolved

Meanwhile, the Arizona location continues its now four-year tradition of existing in a state of visible construction and invisible opening dates. The coasters are there. The park is not open. The website says coming soon.

Two Mattel Adventure Parks. One has been stuck in a loop of delays since 2021. One is now tangled up in NFL stadium politics in a city where a football team has become one of the most talked-about organizations in American sports culture.

The Barbie Beach House has a rooftop bar planned. Nobody can get to it. Coming soon has been covering a lot of ground for a very long time.
