For years, fans have speculated about who might take on the role of Dazzler in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Taylor Swift emerging as the frontrunner. But as Marvel ramps up its introduction of Mutants into the MCU, new rumors suggest that another pop icon, Lady Gaga, might just steal the spotlight. Could this be the end of the Swiftie Dazzler dream?
As Marvel continues to weave more Mutants into the MCU, speculation surrounding the casting of each character has intensified. One of the most talked-about roles is Dazzler, AKA Alison Blaire— a pop star with the ability to manipulate light and sound. For some time, Taylor Swift has been the fan-favorite choice for the role, and it’s easy to see why.
Taylor Swift: The Perfect Dazzler?
Not only does Swift – who recently released her latest album, “The Life of a Showgirl” – share striking physical similarities with the fictional character, but there were also some compelling theories suggesting she would make her MCU debut as Dazzler in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024). Fans grew even more convinced after seeing Swift spending time with Shawn Levy (the film’s director), Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine).
In a conversation with The Vancouver Sun, Reynolds, who is close friends with Swift (at least before Swift was embroiled in a lawsuit involving his wife, Blake Lively), addressed the speculation about her involvement. “I love it [the gossip]. I think it is a sign of how eager people are to get a peek behind the curtain in this world. Every single one of these secrets and spoilers will be revealed on July 26,” Reynolds teased.
However, when July came and went without a Swift cameo, fans were left to wonder if Marvel was planning something for a future project.
A New Frontrunner for Dazzler
While Swift’s Dazzler may still be a possibility, rumors suggest another pop icon could be in line for the role.
According to Marvel scooper My Time To Shine Hello, Marvel President Kevin Feige is reportedly more interested in casting Lady Gaga as Dazzler.
This wouldn’t be Lady Gaga’s first foray into the world of comic book adaptations, having starred alongside Joaquin Phoenix as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux (2024). Despite the film's mixed reviews, Gaga’s performance was universally praised, solidifying her place in the comic book movie universe.
Additionally, there have been rumors that James Gunn, now overseeing the DC Universe, is also eyeing Gaga for a separate role in the DCU, further cementing her status as a sought-after talent in superhero films.
Our Verdict on Lady Gaga as Dazzler
While the idea of Lady Gaga stepping into the role of Dazzler is intriguing, we think she could play a much bigger part in the MCU. Dazzler, while an interesting character, has never been a central figure in the comics, and it's hard to see her taking center stage on the big screen.
Gaga has become increasingly selective with her acting roles, often opting for lead parts, as seen in A Star is Born (2018). On the other hand, Taylor Swift, who has also dabbled in acting, tends to play supporting roles while focusing primarily on her music career. At the same time, Gaga accepted a cameo role in Netflix's Wednesday, suggesting that she's not entirely opposed to smaller parts in mega-projects.
Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see whether Marvel goes with Gaga, Swift, or someone entirely different for the role of Dazzler. However, with the introduction of Mutants in the MCU just around the corner, we may not have to wait too long for an answer.
Feige previously hinted at the imminent arrival of the X-Men during the Disney APAC Content Showcase in Singapore, teasing, “I think you will see that continue in our next few movies with some X-Men players that you might recognize. Right after that, the whole story of Secret Wars really leads us into a new age of Mutants and of the X-Men.”
