Batman fans are getting an unexpected shift in their viewing schedules. While attention had been squarely on Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, which is set to continue Robert Pattinson’s Dark Knight storyline when it releases in October 2027, the newly announced animated Batman: Knightfall — Part 1 is now taking the spotlight as the next major movie project featuring the Caped Crusader.
Though an exact date is yet to be confirmed, per Variety, a 2026 release will kick off a multi-part animated adaptation of the classic Knightfall comic book storyline. Part of this storyline was brought to life in live action in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (2012), in which villain Bane (Tom Hardy) breaks Batman’s back in battle.

Directed by Jeff Wamester, who has helmed multiple entries in DC’s animated Tomorrowverse, including the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths trilogy, Knightfall — Part 1 will showcase Batman at his lowest.
The story follows the aftermath of Bane freeing Gotham’s most dangerous criminals from Arkham Asylum, pushing the Caped Crusader to his physical and mental limits.

The comic arc of Knightfall remains one of Batman’s defining moments, with Bruce Wayne’s crippling defeat at the hands of Bane and Azrael stepping in to take the mantle. By focusing on these elements in an animated format, DC is giving audiences a chance to see one of the character’s most famous sagas in a dedicated series of animated features.
Meanwhile, Reeves’ live-action sequel remains in development but has effectively been sidelined in terms of fan anticipation. Scheduled for 2027, The Batman – Part II will continue Robert Pattinson’s story, but for the foreseeable future, it’s the Knightfall film series that will demand attention.
As for the upcoming reboot, The Brave and the Bold, which is expected to form part of the new DC Universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran, there have been no updates on that project for some time.

Fans also have plenty of other Batman content to look forward to, including the video game “LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight”, which is also set for release next year, and the novel “Batman: Revolution”, which continues the Tim Burton universe and hits shelves later this month.
With multiple projects across animation, live-action, and publishing, 2026 and beyond will keep Gotham’s Dark Knight in the spotlight.
Batman: Knightfall — Part 1 hits theaters in 2026, marking the first step in DC’s four-part adaptation and effectively taking the next major Batman movie crown from Reeves’ sequel.
