The Haunted Mansion Reopened at Disneyland… Something Else Is Inside

Disneyland's Haunted Mansion is open again after thirteen days behind scrims. The version that closed is not the version that came back, and it will not return until 2027.

Some context.

Look, for almost two weeks one of Disneyland's most recognizable attractions just sat there with nobody going in. That is a not a weird sight in New Orleans Square this time of year. Haunted Mansion does not close casually, and when it does, that whole walkway feels hollow.

Anyone who visited between August 8 and August 20 got nothing. No version of it running at all.

The closure was never a secret. Disney confirmed the 13-day window in advance and everybody knew what was happening behind those walls.

But do not call it a refurbishment. Disney was not repairing anything and reopening the same show. Ride it August 7, come back today, and you get the same Doom Buggy system dragging you through a completely different experience.

As of August 21, Haunted Mansion Holiday is live.

Sandy Claws Took the Place Back

Jack Skellington and The Nightmare Before Christmas have seized the mansion for the 2026 fall and winter seasons.

And it starts before you get anywhere near a Doom Buggy.

  • Ribbon-style Haunted Mansion Holiday sign at the entrance gates
  • Jack Skellington in full Sandy Claws gear, perched on a jack-o'-lantern atop an entrance column
  • Garlands, dangling mathematical Christmas equations, and spiderweb candelabras across the balconies
  • The hearse out front wrapped in greenery under a Santa hat jack-o'-lantern

This Year's Gingerbread Is the Real Event

Most of the overlay repeats every year and regulars can recite the whole thing. The one piece that actually changes is the gingerbread build in the Grand Ballroom, and it is the first thing people go looking for.

2026 version: a giant music box modeled after Haunted Mansion itself.

There is a winding key on the side wearing Jack Skellington's face, Santa Jack on one side, regular Jack on the other. Music kicks in and a skeleton cookie ballerina rises out of the roof and spins.

Sitting dead center on the banquet table. Genuinely impressive build.

What Is Waiting Inside

All the scenes people wait all year for.

  • Jack and Zero take over for the Caretaker and his dog at the cemetery entrance, handing out holiday “presents”
  • Sally draped over a gravestone pining for Jack as you enter a graveyard full of singing jack-o'-lanterns
  • Oogie Boogie near the end in a candy-encrusted beard and pointed Santa hat, spinning his wheel of tricks and treats to drop a holiday “gift” into your Doom Buggy mirror
  • A tiny Sally waving you off up the exit ramp

Why They Cannot Just Do It Overnight

People ask this annually.

Haunted Mansion Holiday is not decorations bolted to the front of the building. Disney rebuilds scenes throughout the attraction and swaps in different characters, props, music, and effects from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

You cannot do that around moving Doom Buggies. Hence the full shutdown. Thirteen days this year to pull it off.

The Classic Is Gone. Really Gone.

Pay attention if you are booking a fall or winter trip.

Haunted Mansion Holiday runs continuously through Halloween Time and the Christmas season, sticking around until early January 2027.

Meaning the traditional Haunted Mansion is off the table for months. Show up between now and early next year and you are riding the overlay, period.

Love the overlay? Great, you have a long runway. Prefer the classic? See you in 2027.

It Just Hit 25 Years at Disneyland

Milestone season here.

Disneyland debuted Haunted Mansion Holiday in 2001, so this is year 25.

Disney marked it with a shirt released August 21, and per social posts about it, the back features gingerbread houses built for the attraction over the years.

Which is a smart move, since the gingerbread is the one thing that has actually changed every single season.

The Ride Underneath All This

None of it works without the original.

Haunted Mansion opened at Disneyland in August 1969 after years of development. Imagineers blended spooky environments with comedy, elaborate illusions, memorable characters, and a genuinely playful take on the supernatural.

Stretching room. Ballroom. Graveyard. Endless hallway. Hitchhiking Ghosts. That formula got copied at other parks later. Disneyland's is the original.

Almost no Disney attraction transforms this completely for months and then reverts, which is exactly why this swap is treated like an event.

Heading Over to Disneyland

Open now, running through early January 2027.

Visiting during Halloween Time or Christmas season? This is what you are riding. Expect ugly waits the next few weeks, since the reopening collides with Halloween season crowds.

And if the gingerbread music box is why you are going, keep your eyes on the Grand Ballroom.
